Bolt action vs. AR for predators?

That's what I would say if they weren't as accurate as my bolt guns

Their were some guys on here that had them in an AR-10 I believe but the caliber didn't cycle so well so I was told and it was a lot heavier than an AR-15.

I would love to have an AR but it would make me feel like I am betraying my trusty Savage 22-.250. Plus I can't think of a situation where an AR would have allowed me to get a double I couldn't get with my bolt.

You can load an AR15 quietly:

1. Lock the bolt back.
2. Drop a round in the chamber.
3. Use the charging handle to slowly release the bolt and go forward.
4. Use the forward assist to put the bolt in battery.
5. Do a chamber check.
6. Hit forward assist one more time.

It is easy and quiet.

[beeep] - ya'll some bad boys..LOLL - sub moa with a AR at 200 yards...ya'll need to come to Texas..I would love to be on the range that day. Sorry, I will stick to a 700 with a 26 inch pipe in 22-250,

You obviously haven't shot or been around the modern AR. I was shootin yotes with a CZ American in 243.. My AR is better handling and will shoot at least 1MOA @ 200.. I don't need a 4 foot long 22-250 to kill yotes as I can call em in close.. I put the bolt gun in the safe and use the AR now..

this is a simple answer for me a bolt rifle is alot cheaper than a ar type . so its simple math im going with a bolt gun ... i would love to have a an ar but the budget wont allow it especially after i have talked the wife into letting me buy a foxpro ...

ALL of mine that don't have chrome lined barrels will easily do that. 1 moa at 200 yards = 2". It's not that difficult of a benchmark. Btw, not bashing Rem 700's at all, two of my favorite ar's wear take off barrels from 700's, reamed out to 223 AI.

And I'm certainly not bashing your choice in rifles, this is America and we can all choose what we want. If anything I usually pick oddball calibers/rifles just because I don't want the same thing everyone else has.

But I wanted to set the record straight. Playing devil's advocate, I can come up with several possible nagatives of the ar platform. Lack of accuracy potential is not among them.

I hunt with a bolt gun because that is what I have owned. But I just picked up a bushmaster predator for $550, so we will have to see which one I like better.

REASONS FOR AN AR-15/M4
1. I my CMMG M4 LE for 700 bucks new. Price not a factor.
2. Saves on the price of a scope base for what it's worth.
3. Noise is a negative, but barrel length is variable. And my stuff will all end up suppressed anyways.
4. Carry all your rounds in 1-2 20 rd. mags, not all over in your pockets.
5. Tons of easy upgrades
6. Do all bolt guns shoot MOA at 200 yards? No way. I don't see accuracy as a concrete advantage for either rifle.
7. Not sure why action noise is a factor, unless you only load the rifle when you see the coyote?
8. More ergonomic, at least for me.
9. Flash hider is awesome for night hunting, few bolt guns are threaded for them (regular factory ones anyway)
10. Not sure why you would want a 26 inch barrel in a 22-250, the 16" on my M4 hits steel plates at 500 yards just fine.
That said I absolutely love my bolt guns, but my M4 is now my go-to gun for everything but big game hunting.

To say the least - The only AR platform I ever carried was a M16-and it was not by choice....but we had some 870's and some 700's in the hole with us..I believe the fella said he could shoot - SUB moa - with his AR at "200" yards...I have not owned or shot any since 79 - so I ma sure there are some like the Rock River and M&P that will shoot 1MOA at 200 - I can accpet that - but the thread stated "long range" - I dont consider 100 yards to be "long range"...I promise you - you can bring whichever Platform of AR you want to to the range - and I will out shoot it at 200 yards with my 700- my handloads of course.I'm not knockin owning any AR type weapon....most of my 700's topped with a Leupold cost twice the amount of money than any AR on the market....and last but not least - its not the weapon in hand - its the Operator behind the weapon.I'm not new to hunting any critters - just new on this board.

Be careful there, you're making a pretty bold statement.

Also, MOA is an angular measurement, 1 MOA is 1.047" at 100 yards, 2.094" at 200, 3.141" at 300, etc.

If there's no wind, my AR will do about half that.

Maybe your 700 will do even better. Sub-MOA with a good AR isn't at all rare, though, and some are guaranteed from the factory to put 3 into 1/3 MOA at 100.

AR-15s in 6.5 Creedmore or whatever it is called now stretch out to 1K. And saying that you have twice the price of an AR in a Remington isn't something to brag about, but seems to be about par for an accurate Remmy. Buy it, strip it down to the action, blueprint it, new barrel, new knob, sako this, m-16 that, and then it will shoot.

Well I guess since I have been shooting 700's since 67- I'm stuck on em..LOLL

I will take a 700 out of the box- Float the barrel- glass it - do a 3# trigger job - drop a Leupold 4.5-14x50mm and I will go round for round against any AR at 200 yards...thats not bragging or beating my own drum..thats just my set up for all types of hunting - add in the factor of my own handloads that are matchgrade-and I'm done...AR's have thier place- No denying that- would I run out and buy one today becuz its the Craze and Rage going on right now ?? NO ! A 700BDL Custom - off the rack - 870.00 with Leupold 4.5-14x50mm - 680.00
(I will let you do the math ) -vs- say a Rock River for 900.00- I will keep shooting my set up - only putting the numbers out there for the fella who said most people dont shoot or own AR's due to the cost factor.
