Bolt action vs. AR for predators?

Why, that's just downright crazy talk right there!

Specifically (besides floating the barrel and installing a 3lb trigger), stiffening (or replacing) the stock, pillar and glass bedding, including installing a better recoil lug, lapping the bolt lugs, "facing" the action and barrel to ensure proper alignment, sleeving the bolt/action to improve stiffness, etc, etc,.

If you're talking about our military sniper rifles, the first difference from "out of the box" is that they replace the stock with a McMillan, and then the armorers start working over every individual rifle for accuracy. Every U.S. military sniper rifle includes the civilian equivalent of many thousands of dollars of gunsmithing in order to make them accurate enough to do the job. In fact, (though I'm not sure how far along the procurement plans are) in order to avoid that factor and save money, there's plans for our snipers to switch to the AI platform. That's a British $6600 "out of the box" bolt gun that basically has the gunsmithing included, and it's cheaper in the end than the Rem 700s our guys are currently using).

If you're talking about your "title holder" friends, ask them what their rifles cost them and what gunsmithing they've had done to them. I'd bet you dollars to doughnuts they have (many) thousands of dollars and extensive gunsmithing, probably most if not all of what I outlined above, into their title winning rifles, even if they started with a custom action and not a 700.

The question at hand isn't whether or not a bolt gun CAN be made to be more accurate than an AR, it unquestionably can be (see my previous post). The question was whether the normal off the shelf or out of the box bolt gun was more accurate than the regular off the shelf or out of the box AR...generally speaking...IT'S NOT.

That's not opinion, it's fact. For proof look at the guarantees of accuracy from the factory, bolts vs ARs.

That's not a slam on bolt guns, as I said previously I own several extremely accurate (1/4 moa or better) 700/40xs and love the platform...but they didn't come that way from the factory.

There are a lot of misinformed keyboard commandos on this thread as well...

Those still looking at AR's as a spray and pray rifle are severely misinformed and to the point of looking extremely foolish. Hard to take anything they say seriously.

I hate that when people say spray and pray.

Thank You.

How sensitive to ammo choice are they, as far as FTF or FTE?

Can AR's fire with the cartridge out of battery?

Is the sight picture thru the scope the same as a bolt gun?

Do the $600 AR's have a trigger as good as the Accutrigger on my $600 Savage?

Just some questions I had....

I really am thinking about selling my Ruger .22-250 and getting an AR in .223. If I like it for coyote hunting, I could move the Savage PH over to prairie dogs and stuff. The Ruger's not one of my favorite rifles anyway.

All sarcasim aside... When it comes to predator hunting, I'm gonna say that a coyote won't know wether or not he was hit by a bolt gun or an AR. It's just a matter of personal preferance. I like the bolts.

Dave : I added one of my websites to my profile - click on my profile and go to My homepage- Click on the page titled "hunting" we did a little test yesterday- LOLL...Pretty much ends this story. I Guess the storm troopers and swat wanna be's are going to continue the saga,,,,so this Ford vs Chevy comedy ends here for me! Later-

Edit: The top picture is my 700...the picture under it is my friends M&P,,, nuff said there.

I wouldn't buy one without handling and shooting one before hand. It may not fit you well. It seems that you either like it or you don't. If your not completely sure, stick with your bolt gun.

I do not own a Savage, so I cant comment on the trigger. I can say the CMMG trigger is not as good as my Tikka bolt gun. Sight picture is different as well, stocks are completely different as well as the scope mounts.
Cant comment on the other question as I've only owned an AR for 6 mo.

I didnt take the time to read through this whole thread..

I know allot of guys who kill coyotes with an ar, and allot of guys who kill coyotes with a bolt gun. Its strictly preference in my opinion.

I was started on an Bolt gun and have always gravitated towards them. I have tried AR's and I really just dont like the "feel" of them if you know what Im saying?

As far as double and triples and quads and five on one stand. whatever you call that? I can see were an AR would be nice. I have achieved all of as many as 5 coyotes on one stand with my bolt action so its definately not a hinderance on me.

I find myself rushing to much, and also shooting too much

with an AR.. I guess just because Im so used to my bolt gun.

Just the other weekend 3 coyotes can into my set. First coyote reaced 75yds. I dropped him, I ki-yied 2nd dog stopped at 277yds. I dropped him. took the 3rd coyote running at 396. There seems to always be pauses in between my shots were im either calling, adjusting my rifle, switching sound on the Foxpro.. very rarely do I shot one dog and instantly swap to another coyote. and when I do the my bolt gun just feels like its an extension of me.. you definately have t o make your shots count. I think its made me a better shot as well, whenever I get an AR in my hands I tend to "spray"
lol.gif
ammo.. Like I said I have taken hundreds and hundreds of coyotes with a bolt so my opinion is very biased!

But I think the conclusion is that it is just what you are comfortable with.. and personal preference..
