Colorado Wildlife Commission to ban Varmint hunting

OK Colorado guys, we need more help.

One of the best things we could have is a few ranchers, cattle producers, wool growers, at the meeting to support the need for shooting as a method of PD population control.

To those of you that have a "stable", or for that matter, one rancher, see if they could join us in Grand Junction. If not, see if they would write a letter to the Commission for us to present at the meeting.

We're on a roll. The "huggers" won't see this train coming! Unless, of course, they frequent PM.

Now is the time for all good varmint shooters to rise to the need of their sport!

Hey Dennis, how about writing a letter, as a ranch owner, outlining what devastation PD's cause to your hayfields. Maybe your buddy to the east would write one too. I'll be happy to help put it together.
 
This is a good example of what we have to get accomplished in the next twenty-seven days. I am about to send out the first of our newsletters. If you haven't sent me your email addy then I won't be able to send the newsletter to you.

The reason for the newsletter is to keep our plan of action out of the hands of the huggers. We know they lurk on this site. So no detail of what we are doing should be posted on the internet.

My future wifes parents used to be ranchers, her brother is a rancher, her uncle is a rancher, cousins, etc. I also have some friends that are ranchers.

I might try to get a contact with the cattlemans assoc.

I'm not worried about being out in the open on this, but why is the University of Denver Law School participating in this? I find it quite amazing. These rich kid "wanna-be" lawyers seem to be grossly mis-guided. It would seem to me, they would be focusing on more important threats to our society. I sure hope they re-adjust their views before they run for political office.

It may be worthwhile to launch a full attack against DU. I have found some very interesting names that serve on the DU Board of Directors. I wonder what a well focused mail campaign would accomplish.

The more i think about this crap--the more pissed i get. I am so tired of nonhunters ruling these issues--ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE TO PONY UP TO THE TABLE!! I say--NO REPRESENTAION WITHOUT TAXATION! What gives them the right to control the management of something hunters pay for? By God, if they want a say it's time to tax the people. Why in the hell do their emotional issues have to rule wildlife management?

You know honestly if these guys are successful, hunters must get together and not hunt for 1 year in CO. We NEED TO SHUT THESE TYPES AND THE WILDLIFE COMMISSION DOWN--period. That's the 1 act that would do it.

I appreciate your response. However, I don't think the total withdrawal from hunting will happen. Remember, we are in a minority. There are a lot of big game hunters out there that don't support what we do.

I suggest that we be more pro-active. We are not bad guys. In some respects, we are no different than exterminators. "Otto the Orkin Man", if you would. This group that confronts us now, makes no mention of mice, rats and other vermin that are considered as pests. To the ranchers and farmers of Colorado, prairie dogs are little more. To paint a warm and fuzzy picture of a PD is little more than painting a warm and fuzzy picture of a rat. That's where we need to fight.
 
I would be glad to represenet the group here at the meeting....what we need to really get organized are numbers......gather all the info we can about the $$$ involved.....what incidentals other than guns, ammo, and lic sales there are....what impact this would have on some economies, does anyone know of any outfitters that do guided PD hunts? they would be good to get involved.....maybe the Co st outfitters association...I think we also need to stress the fact that this is a hunting issue, not shooting.....i brought up this fact to my friend on the commission......PD hunting is usually one of the first things we do with our youngsters to get them started hunting, to stress gun safety, etc.....it is a part of our heritage... pm me for my email address and lets stay in touch......AJ
 
I think the issue that should be stressed the most is the fact that ranchers will curb poisoning if there are shooters actively shooting the town. I have heard this from more than 1 rancher. Truth is i believe they really don't want to poison, they just need to once the towns get too big.

If we bring up the point that this is really the perfect management tool in the above respect then maybe that will have an impact.

It should certainly be mentioned that if the proposal passes a poisoning campaign will occur at an unprecedented level, and it will certainly be responsible for the demise of millions of PDs throughout the state.

I think that we also should mention the point that death is never a pretty picture, whether it be an elk, deer, or whatever species, but that shooting is more effective with less suffering involved than death by poison. The management of a species should never be based upon emotion. The Commission needs to get beyond this and get to what is best for the species.

The economic impact in an uncertain economic future is important also.
 
There are many ways to fight. Organizing your opposition, petitions , letter writing etc are all effective to some degree.

Taking cheap shots a Pm isn't really effective.
As a non profit organization we are governed by laws that the regular citizen is not. One of them being:

(ii) no substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the corporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements) any politial campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office except as authorized under the Interal Revenue Copd of 1954, as ammended;

Now because we are new at this non profit status, it is very important that we follow the regulations laid out for us.

I'm sure many of you have seen that we operate under a microscope here very day, manned by some who would like to see us fail. Cheap shots and innuendo do not help us get to our stated goals. We are all in this together. Focus on who is trying to take away your sport. PM will do what we can in ways that we can.

Is there an angle that we could use for leverage claiming that a group of supposedly "educated" individuals are attempting to undermine the CDOW management principles by presenting strictly emotional propaganda to the contrary of those principles?

Seems like if it was worded properly the proposal could actually be ridiculed.
 
Something i just thought of is to contact as many of the advertisers as possible in the back of the Varmint Hunter magazine and let them know what's going on.
