Honestly I did not know there was a feed problem until I read this thread. I went into this project intending to make the gun a single shot from the start, so that's why I bought that follower.
I already had and was used to using two other single shot bench varmint rifles.
I have no idea of how to address the problem.

I could live with a single shot if I must lol. Maybe i could do some tinkering and get it to work... I suppose a magazine couldn't be specially ordered to fit the Stevens???

I'm not sure that the length of the magazine is the biggest problem, I think the lips on the magazine turning the shell loose too soon with a push feed bolt could be the problem. Just as an experiment I tried feeding a 221 out of a 223 magazine on a CZ 527 and it worked alright but that is a controlled round feed bolt.

The only negative that I can see is action length. The short Savage action is a lot longer than a short Rem. action, it's actually a bit closer in length to the Rem. long action. I'd have doubts about how well a Fireball could be made to feed in one of those actions. If you don't mind using it single shot then it ought to work fine. I converted a short 700 in .223 to 17MIV and it fed/ejected with no problems. A short action like the Sako or Mini Mauser or CZ works like it was made for the Fireball.

My experience with an Adams&Bennett is that it's worth about what it costs, which isn't much. Spend a bit more and get something good.

Get an action wrench. And you don't need a headspace gauge, use a case. It works fine.

If I were going to be limited to a singls shot, Id look at getting a T/C Contender frame, and then just add barrels. Contenders may not be everyones cup of tea, but its an idea. I have Pistol barrels, and a Carbine barrel with the proper stocks, and its very easy to change. Good Luck Gary!

getfoxy, that sounds like an awesome project! I was tinkering with the idea of a 221fb in a savage 110 wich is basically the same thing. Cant wait to see your results! good look!

True but contenders are ugly lol, and you know my feelings towards Thomson center right now haha. Plus I'm a bolt guy anyway and maybe with a little bit of luck I can get it feed, plus I don't ever see myself wanting to add bbls to my collection so that shoots the tc down right there

I have no experience with A&B barrels, but another good barrel at a good price is Shaw.
They also make pre-fit barrels for Savage-Stevens.

I've heard that getting a Savage to feed the FB case is next to impossible too, but can't say for sure. I can however tell you that even if you have to single feed it, the 221"s very efficient and WAY up there on the fun scale.
Build what YOU want to build and enjoy it.

The reason I brought up the feeding issue was I have a Rem 722 that was re-barreled to 22PPC and if you try to feed it slowly and quietly it will launch a shell, if you get your timing right it will feed. Launching a shell will sometimes scare animals, swearing does that to some animals.

adams and bennett barrels are er shaw barrels

they are not shilen, douglas or high end barrels and the price reflects that...

but i have had quite a few and none, and i mean none shot bad,
i had a stainless fluted 22-250 that shot 1/4" groups with varget and 50gr BT

Thanks guys. I'm defintley gonna Do this. Just as soon as I get a 200 i'n .223, stock will be sent off to get dipped, should be a good lookin little shooter. Thanks for all help and advice..

Wasn't criticizing A&B barrels at all. Like I said "I have no experience with them". I was just throwing out another less expensive option.

Didn't know that A&B barrels were ER Shaw barrels either, but it stands to reason that they're accurate since I know Shaw's barrels are.
Wonder why they don't just call em Shaw barrels?

Adams and Bennett are subsidiary of midwayusa
so they buy in bulk from shaw and put there name on it....just like guide gear is to sportsmans guide and so on...

and i know you were not criticizing them, was just saying...
