getfoxy,
Over the years I have read most of your 3500+ posts. I can assure you that you are more of a man than many of the keyboard junkies on the hunting forums that I frequent.

I didn't figure you had those intentions, but just i'n case I alway fire back ( a habit I really need to break) I figured if you were of the "smart" type we surely woulda butted heads by now lol. You know what they say... Old habits die hard, but I'm working on it.

Foxy,

To answer a couple of your questions, If you use a varmint taper barrel, you will have to find a stock off of a 12FV or use a B&C Duramax stock (around $100 for plain black). The big thing about replacing your stock is determining whether you have a stagger feed or a center feed. The easiest way to tell is when you take the stock off, if the magazine stays on the action it is a stagger feed. If it stays on the stock it is a centerfeed.

If it is a centerfeed, disregard the above about using a Duramax. They don't make them for the centerfeed yet.

I would say that a #4 taper is about as heavy as you can get by with using your standard stock.

I have not personally owned an A&B barrel, so I won't comment on them. McGowan offers prefit Savage barrels in whatever caliber and taper that you want for around $300 and they have great delivery time, about 4 weeks normally. I have one in 25-06AI and it shoots great. Pac Nor and Shilen both make prefit barrels in the same price range, but there lead times usually run 16-20 weeks.

Just to give you an idea on price and the wait time, I ordered a Shilen barrel in 6x45 for my savage. Placed the order on Oct.1 and delivery is supposed to be around March. Price wasn't bad, around $360 shipped. The contour I chose should fit the stock with no problem.

I have a model 12 fv but it's a 22-250... I think I'm just gonna try to find a rifle that came chambered for the round. I've had a few pm's from people who have them, I just gotta get my fp sold

Last summer I had a A & B .221 FB barrel put on my Savage 16 with tupperware factory stock and The one I got Droped right in. Have since replace that stock with a T-hole with factory conture. Mine is a 4.27" with stagger feed. This gun happens to load reliably with the bolt. Finaly got it to eject with a little modification. The .221Fb A & B barrel performed as good as the Factory .223 barrel that I had taken off the 16 action. I also have the .221 in th CZ 527 and also a Rem classic in .221. Nice rifles to be sure but I wanted a true left handed bolt and the Savage provided that.

Hey Foxy- I hope you are satisfied!

All that talk about making you a .221 got me to thinking what fun it would be so I bought the last A&B .221 barrel that was on sale at Midway. My M12 .378 size bolt action should be here in a week or two as well. Got a buddy in Tennessee lending me his go no-go gauges for the Furball and I have a Choate Varminter stock sitting empty just waiting to have a barrelled action dropped in it. Looks like I am going to have to do some safe rearranging once again. Oh well. I think that it will all be worth it somehow!

Sorry rust!!! I wish you luck with it. I've decided to just buy a rifle already chambered for the .221, just gotta get rid of this stinkin foxpro lol. Let us know how it works for you.. We want pics

Add another to the list of those who appreciate the little Fireball. I just bought my second rifle in that cal. - a leftover Rem. LVSF to go with my Cooper; did have a C-Z which I regrettably sold. These are great centerfires for shooting close to built-up areas: more energy and fps than a Hornet, but won't travel as far as the .204 and up (and a little quieter, too.) Plus, my wife thinks the cartridges are so darned cute; I have to agree.
Good luck with your search!
