Ditto on punctuation. It's a courtesy to the reader. And if the writer skips too much punctuation, I skip reading what he wrote.
I've taught writing a bit, but never truly figured out the deepest why of punctuation till I taught a writing course to tribal people in Pakistan (long story, too involved). They would write a good story but sometimes use one sentence for the whole page or two. They are oral communicators, used to spoken word and stories told. When they write, they express all of the tones, emphases, pauses and body language in their minds, but none of that shows up on the page. FWIW I've been told that the first two chapters of Genesis are one sentence.
Punctuation began as merely a code to help the reader follow all of those non-verbals of oral communication, and at its best, that's still what punctuation is.
Side trip from the original post, but connected by tangent.
