Coyotes nearly killed my dog!

Atropine to diolate the eye, and, Vetropolycin as an antibiotic. Twice daily. What do you think?

plus i took one more coyote out for him this morning.even if it was a long ways away from him. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wife says that is the proper course of action, short of seeing an opthalmologist and contemplating possible surgery to repair any damage or remove some foreign material. She said it sounds to her like an infection, probably from foreign material lodged in the eye somewhere due to the incident. She said the vetropolycin is a "BNP" (whatever the heck that means? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif) and will prevent further infection as well as kill any staff that is there. (I HATE it when she uses these medical terms and things. Like I'm supposed to understand what she's talking about. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif)

But it sounds like your Dr. is getting it done for you. Must be a pretty competent young man. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
 
I told my wife yesterday that I hope this guy is as good as he thinks he is. He's extremely cocky, and that's alright, that doesn't bother me - as long as he is capable of backing that attitude up. So far, so good.
 
I know what you mean. We don't like listening to their cocky remarks but if they can back 'em up we're glad there's people with that much confidence in themselves.
Especially in the areas of doctors, airline pilots,and such. I can't imagine pursuing a career where you hold lives in your hands.

I might have posted this on PM a while back, but I'm not sure. Anyway.....I wonder how many of these that young DVM has seen that were trying to die? The wife saw this one when we were living in S.C. It weighed over 200#, and was very dehydrated. The little guy made it OK after getting fluids and being "force-fed" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif As you can tell.....my wife ain't scared of much /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for thinking of Bullet. Please keep him in your prayers... If his eyes are not better Tuesday evening I'm calling the Vet for an emergency appointment. They "may" look marginally better. I think not, my wife says maybe a little. If any, it's not much. His left eye looks blind, like there is a whitish film over it.

To top it off, I think he has a darned ear infection too!!! He's shaking his head around and flapping his ears like he did with an ear infection once before. This time it has to hurt, his ears are split from the coyote biting him.

He has a swollen place on his back hip by one of the real big tear places that doesn't want to go down either. I'm worried about the hide seperating from the underlying flesh there because when he shakes himself it seems like he goes one way and the hide goes another. Like it's not attatched underneath.
 
GC sounds like you need to get him back for an early check up. He may have an abscess. That can be serious the Vet may tell you to apply hot compresses. If it's healed over he may need to lance it. Good luck.

I hope Bullet is OK. What you just described doesn't sound too good. As Jay pointed out, he just may have an abscess, which isn't good and can cause problems if not treated. I don't know what to tell you about the white cloud over his eye. I wouldn't think of him being blind as I've had a pet go totally blind on me (from old age) and his eyes where clear as a bell. Scared the ^$@! out of me though, as it was morning and he got up and promptly walked straight into a wall. I knew something was up and did a bit of testing and realised he'd gone blind over the nights sleep. Had to put him down that day and it tore me up, but he's in a much better place now.
I sincerely hope Bullet will pull through all of this with no lingering problems. Keep us informed, please.
 
Thanks for keeping Bullet in your prayers and thoughts! My family is amazed at the support our internet friends are giving Bullet. I never had a doubt!

Bullet had a doctor visit Thursday evening. The Doc says,... Bullet's eye infection is getting better, though very slowly. The Vet put dye in his eye and scoped it with a black light. He "thinks" the infection is repairing itself. We are to continue the eye treatments of antibiotic cream in the eye twice daily for another week. If there is no more improvement within a week that may require surgery.

The swollen place on his hip by the largest bite is not abccessed. They gave him a local yesterday and probed with a needle to draw fluids. There were none. So, he's just that swollen. They did open the large bite back up as it was scabbing over and looked sort of rough. The Vet cleaned it and left it open so it could drain. We have to keep an eye on this one and another big tear through his front shoulder. There are three more through to the bone, one on the inside of the rear leg, one across from it on the outside of the leg, another on his neck. However, they seem to be healing ok. I was petting him and found two more bites the Vet had never found, they're still covered with hair. They are small and seem to be doing alright. Bullet gets antibiotic pills and anti-inflamatory pills twice daily. He's off the pain meds now.

The Vet cleaned and flushed his ears for the infection in his right ear. We have drops for that twice daily.

Poor little guy looks soooo pitiful. Yesterday at the Vet Clinic a little girl came in with her Dad. The dad was taking care of some business with one of the girls behind the counter and the little girl looked around and saw Bullet. She said, "Oh look, a beagle!" She smiled and bent over to look closer. That's when she really "saw" Bullet. She recoiled and gasped, clamping her hand over her mouth and looked away, grabbing to her dad's leg. Made me want to cry for my beautiful Bullet. Bullet actually looked hurt and quit wagging his tail. He's like an old man, the kitchen window sill is full of his medicines. The Doc tells me six months from now we'll all laugh about this... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
 
Sounds like he's coming along pretty well......considering what he went through.

Dog bites are nasty things. Lots of bacteria involved, and feral or wild canines are the worst. Make sure he gets his drugs regularly. Infection is going to be your main concern from here on out.

You're fortunate to have such a noble and brave pet. Almost sounds like he's taking it better than Dad right now? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good to hear the vet thinks the eye is healing. I pray it (and the other injuries) continue to heal. It certainly sounds like he's much better now than a week ago. It'll just take time now. Good luck!
 
Thanks for asking and keeping Bullet in your thoughts. We're going to have to go back for the eye. It's better, but not healed and has a glazed film over it. That eye just doesn't seem to want to clear up completely. It waters and bugs the heck out of him. The Vet had given it until today to be better otherwise he'll need to take some sort of alternative action, maybe surgery. It's aggravating because at this point it's about the only thing that isn't healing well. His wounds are pretty much closed now and hair is growing back into the shaved places. He's getting around much better now. His ear infection is gone. He doesn't know it, however, he is getting a bath tonight. First one since the attack three weeks ago and boy does he need it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Funny this came back up. I had him outside a little after daylight to go potty. He was goofing around in the back of the yard, I was leaning against a big hickory tree sipping a cup of coffee enjoying two squirrels bouncing around in the trees nearby. I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and saw something running into the creek behind the house and right in front of us. Two large animals coming hard our way! I snapped out of my fog and ran over to Bullet, snatched the .45 ACP out of the holster and made ready for war. Luckily I had just gotten in from work and still had my handgun on. The critters slipped into the thick brush and were now easing along and I could identify them better as they slowed down and got closer. A buck deer and a doe! Whewwww.... I did call a coyote back there the other day. My first calling trip of the fall. The weatherman misjudged and said we would have light steady winds from the south on that particular morning with a warm start. When I left the house just before daylight the wind was blowing around 20 mph and it was stinging my face with hard sleet. I set the FX3 and Predator Supreme out and turned up the new MKII Dying Jack and readied the Benelli M1S90. After about four minutes here came a coyote trotting along down a slight hillside, he hit the bottom and turned my way. Then he threw up his nose at 80 yards and turned on a dime and bugged out back down the bottom the opposite way from me. The wind which was supposed to be steady was swirling around and he scented me. Shifty bastages!
