damage coyotes can do

I will tell you a couple stories.
I know a guy indirectly that lives close to Lansing.
he had his full grown doberman chained up behind the house . He came home just in time to save its life and get his dog to the vet to get stitched up . he said it was from 2 coyotes.

the other was just down the road from me this guy was missing his older Brittney spaniel ,so he went looking for it.
he found it ,it was still alive but the rear haunches or hams, were ate out . he had to put his dog down. man that has got to be a sad thing to do.

any of you have similar tales to share.

I had to put my own spaniel down, my self, many years ago. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried more on that day then I have since.

1-fresh adult coyote is plenty for any dog to handle. Let alone a pr or a family group of coyotes. Old coyote hunter friend of mine raised a female coyote. He also had coyote killing sighthounds, in high fenced pens.

This female coyote whom roamed their yard freely[family pet?]. Did not like one of his large female sighthounds. That was in her own pen. The two canines detested eachother, specifically. All his other dogs were males. Et would've loved to been turned loose on that coyote.

One day, that coyote climbed an 8'high extended chain link fence & commenced to wail on that lone dog. Up until that day. That large dog couldn't climb out of her high pen. Well, she did that day to get away from the coyote's butt kicking.

Larry ended up shooting his pet coyote.

I've spoken with other farmers & acrege owner's. Whom have had pr's or family groups of coyotes. Pile onto their dogs which were NOT penned outside. But either chained outside or roamed the land freely.

A pr of coyotes whom hold the land a person lives on. Well, expect the locals to eventually pay your dog a visit. He/she, best be tough or penned up. Or that dog will have heck to pay. I believe the locals view a pet as a tresspasser. They don't like tresspasser's.

A fresh coyote is full of kick hiney[buzz-zaw]. They are a blur in a fight. Faster than any dog I've ever seen fight. Even when being killed by dogs. The last body part moving on a coyote, that is dieing. Is most often, their jaws.

Coyotes get the blame for alot of things they don't do or things that people themselves can avoid happening.
Mt lions, wolves and bears well eat your dog and cat if you put them in the food chain, now who's falt is that? The coyotes right.

It's one thing to be in the food chain as you put it....but I have seen where coyotes kill just to kill. Call it trespassing or whatever. They will kill sheep, goats, young deer and never eat the meat.....just kill. That's one of the reasons why I hunt them.

billy the kid I dont have Mt. lions or wolfs in my area. and few bear.so I do blame the coyotes. lion will kill befor eating .and i think a bear would also not sure about wolfs?

Coyotes are only doing what God put them on the Earth to do. If it may be because of hunger so be it. If its because of a territory threat so be it. Don't blame the coyote for his wild nature. I used to have a cat that would kill mice and just play with them never ever eating it for food. I used to praise that cat for doing what was natural for it. Maybe because it was convienant for me and I saw no harm in it. I have seen my fair share of damage done to cattle growing up in the Flint Hills of Kansas once when I was 9 I came across a calf that been eatin on by coyotes from the butt forward and still alive and balling. Tough for a 9 year old to understand the laws of nature. Who's to blame??? Maybe his wild ways, but not the coyote.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Coyotes aren't the only ones who kill just to be killing. Cats do, your sweet family dog will if you let him run at night, people kill for ??? maybe the fun or the rush, a weasel will kill for fun, just put one in a chicken coop. I think that it is that the coyote kills without regard to our wishes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

CFS, old wiley ain't the only animal that kills for fun...Try the worst of all...man.

I've personally seen what coyotes can do many different times, like pulling a calf out of a cow or trying to get a young dog across a dirt road so 3 other coyotes can jump it.
I sure can't blame the coyote for being a survier.

Something else we have to think about, the coyote was here long before man. It was man that brought all the other animals into the coyotes back yard.

If we as humans don't take care of our personal animals, other animals may. That's just the way it is in nature. Maybe that's why I try to have a gun close by lol.

Coyotes arent the only thing that will kill something and not eat it. I have never eaten a coyote and never will, but I sure like to shoot them!

Coyotes do what they do very well! They are extremely efficient predators.

When I was 10 years old, 5 coyotes worked over my little mixed breed dog. The only thing that saved her was her crawling into her doghouse where they couldn't reach her. I also lot a couple of great barn cats to coyotes, as well as a lot of poultry over the years.

The worst act of 'predation' we ever had happen was when the neighbors Border-collie cross dog got in our duck pen and killed about 40 of my mom's 2 month old butcher ducks. Ripped the heads off and left them lay.

It died of a a severe allergic reaction to a 150 gr. '06 bullet administered by my dad.

Coyotes do get blamed for a lot that they do not do, but they are opportunists that will take advantage of any situation they can!

my boss had a 14 yr old black lab named buck. greatest dog you'd ever see. He can barely get up and he limps a bit when he walks but he always follows him around the farm. He has 3 other labs that have learned from buck and they are also amazingly well behaved dogs. Well buck didn't like coyotes and barked at them everytime he heard them howling. Well one coyote got ahold of him one night because his hind legs were all chewed up and his arseend all ripped up. Boss found him alive and have to put him out his misery. That was a sad day. Well the next weekend my cousins brought 5 hounds down and we ended up getting 3 coyotes that day. Probably seen around 15-20 more though in about 5 miles. Dogs couldnt even follow the tracks because there was so many going very which way. Real swampy area, tons of deer too. I've never called a coyote around here yet in the 4 times I've went but I'm not going to stop.

Billy.....I'm not saying that coyotes are the only ones that kill for fun. All I was saying is that a lot of don't beleive how much damage they do. I hear a lot of folks saying "Oh they're just blaiming the coyotes for all the killing of livestock, or deer, etc." All I am saying is ....I have seen the damage they do. And yes I do blaim them.

My GF had 4 cats when she moved out to Kali.. the first winter one of her favorite cats dissapeared. We are on a Ranch far from city streets. So it could have been an Owl, Hawk,Coyote, who knows ? But its life in the animal world. One of her cats is ruthless, it brings Birds, Gophers, even lizards home. Thats what animals do. Did a Coyote eat the Cat? Who knows? But animals Hunt. Feral Cats kill more Game Birds than Hunters do every year. Coyotes are Sly and will eat almost anything. Now I hunt Coyotes.. had to blame it on something.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

my vote would be to just use poison .Get rid of most you will never kill all of them. but I would rather see more game animals .rather then let those dam coyotes eat them. they are eating what I want to eat.

poison is a bad choice. Slow and painful death.. Id recommend giving them some v-max or #4's as better choice. haha

A very good friend of mine watched 3 coyotes attack one of his prized rabbit beagles earlier this week. He fired 3 shots from his 20 guage, but was to far away to do much more than scare them off. He carried his dog home to rush her to the vet, but she died before he got her home. You can guess where we'll be this coming Saturday morning!

This is a bad idea, that has been tried. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Problem #1: Coyotes won't be the only animals to ingest the poison. Yes, you might kill some coyotes, but you may also kill many animals that you did not intend to harm.
Problem #2: It may be illegal in your state, or even in your community to use a poison. And if your neighbor's pet ingests the poison, guess who'll be going to jail. It won't be a coyote! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
