Diaphragm or Open Reed?

Gotta love Ken's optimism. If I'm off work I'm coming.
I've used diaphram calls while turkey hunting. Talk about a tyro screeching away LOL
I know for a fact hey can be used quite effectively but there's definitely a learning curve involved.
And they clearly lack the beauty delivered by our call makers

I can't believe how disrespectful some of the people on this thread have been. I have found that most threads are helpful, interesting and/or beneficial. Calling people dumb and simple-minded because they prefer a different method or type of call is ridiculous. I'm fairly new to this site, but I would hope that in the future the moderators on this site would do more to intervene and stop this stuff in it's tracks.

So back to the original question, and I as stated early in the post. IMO, no one type of call is better than another...Try all types of calls and carry what you're comfortable with. The more tools in your toolbox, the better. You never know which sound from which call a coyote will respond to.
I've watched coyotes a 1/2 mile away completely disregard my diaphragm (which I'm proficient with) and come bolting in shortly after to a generic, closed reed call (that someone above stated that they "have never found a closed reed that sounds good"). I believe that folks who use only one type of call are probably missing the opportunity to call in more coyotes then if they branched out a bit.
There it is....my opinion without insult. Some should take note at how this is accomplished. Now, back to reading threads that are interesting, helpful, and beneficial to the overall theme of predator hunting.

You'll see that every once in a while, folks get pretty animated with their opinions, but at the end of the day, we're all here for the same reasons and there is no reason that we cannot be respectful when voicing our opinions.

I sincerely hope that...one day...all types of call makers, and call users can put aside our differences & just have fun hunting predators.

Will, it sure isn't "all" that are responsible for what you read above. Just a few. Unfortunately, that stuff affects everyone. Even if just posted on the internet.

I was at the expo last year. During the contest, I could tell real quick who was using a diaphram and a hand call. and was kinda threw for a loop on the one using his natural voice.
I am by no means good at calling coyotes, but with my untrained ear, I thought the diaphrams won hands down. Not saying the hand calling didnt sound good because it did. The natural voice was really cool and really good but in my opinon was 2nd best.
Here is my opinion. Even I could tell, without looking or knowing who was calling, which was a hand call or a diphram. If the callers were placed to where no one could see them and just hear them, it was pretty easy to differintiate between the 2. So, being the judges are way better at this than me, I would say that if there was a grudge, you would know which was which and could be partial in the equation if they wanted to. By no means am I saying it was rigged, but the guys who think they got screwed knows that everyone knows when they are calling and when they are not, just by the sound of the call.
In my experience, I myself sound better with the diaphram. I can use an open reed good as well, but when it comes to making certain sounds, I always use the diapram.

Cheating, biased opinions can be had with anything that is judged. I don't remember anyone saying that it happened but I can't understand most stuff talked about here either. Lots a history and tension is built up between a couple groups. Why? Well Noone really knows and it's hard to decide for yourself with only one side of the story being told. It'll all work out in the end. One way or another it always does.

It isn't going to be an issue for 2014 because the owner of the show informed me a few minutes ago that the calling competition has been cancelled.

Well maybe they can host an arm wrestling competition instead!!!! Arguing about who makes the best or what is the best call is like asking if you like fat girls or skinny girls!!! Everybody has their own opinions. Heck I kinda like em thick!!!! Anyway sad deal its getting cancelled bc of peoples ego!!!!!
