Everyone loves it when things just seem to go right. You know...call up a coyote, lip squeak him in, one shot fired and DRT. Well, as we all know, that's not always the case. Sometimes, shots are pulled and the coyote is injured with a non-lethal shot and is heading out of town, possibly to die a miserable death.

Here is a video from the other night that shows why I use a coyote decoy dog, even at night. We where calling on a ranch that coyotes were killing a mess of newborn calves. We called this male coyote in. The shot was slightly pulled and the coyote took a non-lethal bullet. Gunner holds this injured coyote, while I have the chance to climb down and put it out of it's misery.

Some may find this video disturbing, but this is real life in the calling field. I make no apologies for the humane blow to the head on this coyote.

Viewer discretion is advised!

Hope you enjoy and get a chance to see why I use a dog on every stand.

Tony

What I find most interesting about this video is just how aggressive and tough a coyote is.

My experience with coyotes is still limited and their behavior is what is all new to me. This grit is what I haven't seen before. Beats just hearing about it.
I have seen Gunner and do not believe he is any pushover.

Thanks for posting this informative video Tony.

Who needs a gun, I see it now the new whack attack stick available in stores near you, love it. Good job Tony lovin the vids..Thanks..

The coyote came in early on the stand. I didn't want another gunshot, just put him down and get back up there and keep calling. It was our first stand on the ranch and we needed to get some calf killers put down. That's how I take care of almost all the runners, unless they have too much run in them. Broke my stick on this one. Stinks because that stick has been very loyal to me the past couple years. I need to find a new pecan branch in the yard to make a new one.

Sorry Tony I 100% disagree with yea pal, you sould of shot the coyote again you had many chances to end the silly game you are playing with a clean 2 shot .I would bet money you even had a shot gun on hand that would of worked out for finishing the coyote within secants of the first shot. I didn't think the photos of your dog you post a wile ago and on face book lately with him tormenting what looks to be a gut shot coyote was cool and now this..

the hole thing with not wanting to take the killing shot so not to make any noise on a fresh new stand is a little un believable also .

sorry to see you not only thinking this is cool but to me posting it is even more concerning.

send me your address and i will hook you up with a couple buck for the extra rounds to use

Just my 2 cent pal.

As the hunter your putting us in a bad light! totally un cool

PS
would rather not get into the comment you posted at the end of the video.

because that coyote would have only gotten away if you would have let it.

I also never seen a decoy dog in that video just a catch dog

Tony, you hunted that farm for a reason and that was to remove calf killing predators, a second shot could very well have ruined the area for who knows how many days and caused additional calf loses, you and gunner handled that situation very well. No differant than having a lab bring in a crippled duck and wringing its neck. Well done.

Tony I think that most of us agree you are a true sportsman. Beside, why would you take a chance at shooting your own dog on the follow up shot. I am sure that the cattle ranchers appreciate it also. You and Gunner keep up the good work, I will catch you at the world buddy!

I dont see what the problem is either. George if you find that disturbing, then you better not run coyotes with nothing but greyhound dogs and a ball pin hammer. Not for the faint of heart.

Probably shouldnt but going to anyway.
Armchair coyote hunting seems pretty easy.

Tony send me your address and Ill send yeah a couple of bucks to buy a box of doggy treats for Gunner.

you must have me confused with someone ells

I thought gunner was a decoy dog.
I haven't anything against dog hunting , as for the hammer. what ever floats your boat .
that your sport enjoy it .
I feel this situation is a little different then guys that like to run dogs, the sport of running dogs is getting to see your trained dogs do what they do and I am fine with that . if gunner is nothing but a catch dog he is doing a good job if he is a trained decoy dog then in the other video tony posted with the barking male coyote shouldn't that been the time for gunner to shine? by decoying the coyote into a shot or getting it turned broad side for a better shot that they were looking for

Tony is a caller , gunner is a decoy dog,, all i seen in that video was a dog atacking a wonded coyote . that's all.

how many of the dog running guys are wounding the coyotes before unleashing the hounds?? takes some really good dogs to run down a already dieing advisory. i know many hound guys and i don't think one would thinks chasseing down a wounded critter would be sport or fun it would be done more as a obligation i would think.
but we all here have are opinions and this is mine that's all

George i will tell you this i have hunted behind Gunner he is BOTH a GREAT decoy dog as WEll as a catch dog, and you cant get any better then that , your not going to make a killing shot ever time and thatS where the catching and baying comes in and i have seen it in person, where i killed a big male and he went out to check it and another came in and he keep it around long enough for my son to get turned around and get a shot, So i think , NO i know Tony has the best of both worlds with Gunner. Why would you have wanted to try and get another shot again from where they were at, they would have been taking WAY to big of a chance of hitting Gunner. The only other way to have got a safe shot off would have been to get down just like he did and put the barrel to the coyotes ear and pull the trigger and when you are hunting Ranches where the owner wants them off there one way are another it makes more sense to keep it down to one shot and finish it the way they did.

GREAT JOB TONY AND GUNNER
