Howling Coyotes method

I have been told that the hunters in my area are having the most success in the mornings. What is the latest that you would attempt to go and bag a yote. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks Rich for taking the time so share these with this novice. I really appreciate it. I'm still trying to get #1 and I'm not giving up till I get it.

Good Hunting to All!

jeebe,
Early morning has always been my favorite calling time, with evenings being a close second. They will come all day long though, so when ever you have time to go calling will be good time. Remember that the worst day calling coyotes is better than the BEST day watching the boob tube. Good luck.

Rich,

It's no wonder I didn't see this thread...

Are these techniques limited to use in the East? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Why would this thread be in "Calling in the East"? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This is SOOO helpful, but many western hunters are gonna miss out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

But I digress...

Thanks for pointing this out to me, I have too many BBs with too many forums to try and keep up with... and this one woulda slipped right by me.

You da man!

P.S. The whole East/West thing was fully tongue in cheek, guys.

P.P.S. You are totally welcome to post any of the sounds I sent to you... they might be good examples of how not to howl... LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Krusty,
This method will work anywhere the wild coyote roams. Keep your face into the breeze. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Keep your face into the breeze...

and sit down with you back against some cover and blow your call...

THEY WILL COME!

Right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had a feeling this would work anywhere a coyote roamed... even if he didn't speak "eastern"! LOL hahaha

Hello Everybody.

New here and as you can tell by my name, I want to start calling Yotes in. Have enjoyed reading the posts and wow, I have a lot to learn.

Any ideas on where to start and best sound CD's to use would be greatly appreciated.

If I ask a stupid question, just knock me in the head and say "Duh Hu" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Rich, I used a tactic that I read on here, to take a coyote, yesterday morning.

I went to the edge of a field, just after daylight, and challenge howled about 4 times, followed by a minute of pup whines.

He showed up in less than a minute, at 175 yards. I missed the first shot, then got him witht the second shot. A good probably-2-year old male.

I had used this tactic one other time. It worked but my rifle missed that coyote.(HAHA)

rich, thanks for the tips. this is a new area for me. i feel like james t kirk dating rosie oddonnel, going where no man has gone before.
i did some experimenting the last couple of days. i used my foxpro and coyote locater as well as coyote serenade. i located close to 60 coyotes in small packs of 2-4. every valley and flat had coyotes in them. the weather was such that they were not responding to prey sounds very well. i did manage to get a couple. in the past i was able to locate them and sneak in and call them. they were having none of this. i'm wondering if they have just been messed with to much. i sat on a hill side and challenged one coyote for close to half an hour. at the end he was where he started and so was i. any advise except give up.

shotgun willy,
Using howlers to call coyotes to the gun is still pretty new to most of us. I still have a few questions in my own mind, as to why a coyote does this or that. I wonder what would have happened had you gone silent and waited that mouthy coyote out for awhile? Would curiosity have caused him to come looking for you?

good point, he was over a mile away. i noticed that when i use a female invitation call instead of the serenade or locater coyotes were more likly to respond, that may be just dumb luck. i wouldn't think the other calls would be anymore threatning than the female call.
i thought about going silent for a while as you suggest and then going to the pup with his butt in a wringer.

shotgun willy,
With your coyote being hung up that far away, my best guess is that the coyote was standing on his side of the territory boundary line. It is pretty common for them to stand on their own side of the street and cuss you out like that. Use of the higher pitched howls does seem to make sense. Maybe causes resident coyotes to believe that the stranger they hear over there is smaller than he is. Only the coyotes know for sure though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Rich or Shotgun, what's the diff betweem a female invitation howl and a lone howl? Can anyone post one somewhere so we can hear it?
