I was talking to a guy that used to guide hunters. He did a hunt where a famous hunting show guy was hosting these 2 deer hunts. They shot the deer from a distance with high power rifles and then faked the stalk and shot a muzzle loader to make it look like it was taken by muzzle loader.
The second day he told the outfitter to send another guide out, he didn't want anything to do with the dishonest hunting show.
My thoughts are, how many are staged? Shoot the animal then make a fake stalk? So if you can't see the shot and animal, then it probably was staged? Now I see why the predator show looks odd, like things are faked. I think I can only remember a couple shows out there that show the shot and animal, like Jim Shockey's show, and Best of the West.
 
Wouldn't doubt it a single bit. My dad has had a certain fishing celeb try to buy fish from him on multiple occasions. Glad he did'nt do it.

There is another guy on tv, he always has a guide to show him,,, hello,, if you are a good hunter, why do you need a guide to show you and tell you when to shoot??? I had to laugh he always hunts with this stupid black hat on, in yellow grass here is this sore thumb of a black hat popping up, deer run everytime!!?
As big a name the guy in the show with the blackpowder/rifle kill was I am suprised they need to resort to that!
 
i know the set ups in between the hunts are staged, like the camera man being in front of the shooter while hes stalking! faaaaakkkkeee!

Totally agree.....if you notice with deer shows they seem to always be hunting on some deer ranch. Towers, feeders, guides, and herds of huge deer. Rarely do you actually gain any useful knowledge from them as they pimp their sponsor's product. As if the product or their personal hunting skill made the difference and the managed game preserve they are on had nothing to do with it.

I do think the predator hunting shows are more than likely the most honest, maybe not completely but the most true.
 
I have not watched any in years but I know some are fair chase and the folks that put them together are top notch BUT some are pretty much a joke put on by folks with big ego's. Mr. Nugents's comes to mind as an example of that last category.
 
Thank you Venatic. I can't stand the crapfest that Nugent puts out. I thought I was the only one.

I've seen some episodes of the Primo's show that were pretty suspicious. I know you can sneak up on Mulies in CRP, but I've never seen it done by three guys standing upright talking in a normal tone of voice.

last year I took a famous hunting star out for a night hunt. I put 3 fox, 6 coyotes, a bobcat, 3 hogs and several coons in front of the guy and he never fired a shot! Any one of my kids could have killed any of the animals I put in front of him. Get this he filmed the kill scene before we ever started hunting! EVEN fired shots into the ground for realism. He is the only hunter I have ever guided for that didn't kill an animal. I was glad he didn't!
The next morning Me and Rod Haydel hunted alone and killed some coyotes.

I have taken women, children and beginers, they all took home game!
The guy and his camera man knew way more than anyone else about hunting........trouble is they didn't know a DANG thing about killin'!
Don't know if it was ever on TV or not.
Sure hope not, it was a joke!

ahah right on! i love how on uncle teds michigan ranch he will be sitting in a tree stand and a whitetail will run by then an albino kudu will follow right behaind lol, i guess hes been having issues with the height of his fences!

Most of the hunting shows are poop IMO.

By far the best show right now in my opinion is "On Your Own Adventures." No outfitters or guides, on public and, hunting that the everday Joe can do with some planning and successfull draw applications.

The problem with filming on public land is that it is against the law without proper permits and liability insurance which ups the cost of production. Then it has to be approved by the authorities. Total BS in my opinion. It is public land bought and paid for by our tax money then they put special restrictions on anyone trying to make a living filming, or photographing.
They have now taken away part of our public hunting for horse trails. Problem there is they limit our hunting areas yet the horse riders can go anywhere they wish. They go out of their way in our area to disrupt the use of the land by others,especially hunters. My family was biking on the bike trails once and horse riders forced my kids off the trail. Rude and dangerous. Kudos to anyone willing to film on public land. It wont be me!
 
Not sure about the kills but one thing that always bugs me is the "search" for the dead animal and as the camera man is standing behind the kill the guide and hunter walk up with great surprise " Oh look here he is, we found him". The other thing that bugs me is the posed animal that never has a wound showing to the camera. I realize they must do that for the non hunter who may be watching but lets be realistic, you just killed the animal, a little blood would be expected. Say watch you want about uncle Ted but at least he is the only one I have ever seen that showed most of a field dressing on t.v. At least that was more honest at to what happens than the "bambi" Political Correctness we seem to get fed. Just my .02

yep, just think, all these guys running around with sponsors buying up tags and outfitted hunts makes it just that much harder to find a decent place to hunt.
 
Even the good old Fred Bear is guilty of faking hunting trips his stories. My exbrother in law guided him on a ranch in Nebraska back in the early 80's. The Bear hunting group would shoot turkeys on the roost. Also when the turkey came up to the corn bins to feed in the morning and evening. No calling what so ever!!

That wasn't bad enough, the story that came out in the "Bow Hunting magazine" had one [beeep] of a story how hard the turkey hunt was on that trip and told it like it was all fair chase. I cancled my subscription and never renew it again!!
 
I like Drury Outdoors stuff. All fair chase.

"Cut aways" are common in hunting videos. This basically telling a "video story" as just the "kill shot" doesn't fill out a 30 minute show.

"cut aways" and "staging" are two different things in my opinion.

For example, showing the hunter set up from in front is an obvious cut away. You know the camera man isn't between the hunter and game.

Showing the hunter shoot, and then showing the animal posed for a picture might not tell the whole story.

The worst I ever saw was a bear hunt. They were supposedly stalking a bear down a logging road. When they were showing it with the camera man behind with the bear in the frame, the "pro" hunter was wearing a cowboy hat. In the "cut away", he was not wearing a hat. Then, he obviously shoots the bear in the butt as bear wheels around and bites himself in the butt like he was stung by a bee or something. The narrorator comments "So and so makes a perfect shot". Then teh bear ends up in a pond and has to be shot again.

Like everything, there is good and bad. An easy way and hard way.

I like the filmed just like it happened stuff the best. Bryron's videos are an example of that.
 
It wasn't Shockey, Loni. The guy wears a beard. I can see you might only be able to use one camera, not get all the action, BUT, to shoot it with a rifle, and tell us it was blackpowder, that is just plain wrong, and stupid. If you can't get close enough for a blackpowder, you might as well stay home!
