I have no clue about scopes. I want to get a good quality scope for my 308 that will last forever. Can someone give me some good advice about scopes? I want to know the pros and cons about all of the scopes out there.

I'm using this gun for antelope, deer, and other big game. No coyotes. I have a savage 22-250 with a nicon coyote special scope on it for coyotes. But I have missed 2 coyotes lately due to low light conditions with the coyote special. I'm having a hard time getting use to the circular radicals on the coyote special.

I say get the best Leupold you can afford starting with the VXII 3-9X40 and go up from there. You might want a VXII 4-12X40 if you can swing it go VXIII or even VXL or VX7.

The Leupold VXI and even the Rifleman are OK if you only shoot in good bright sunlight. If you ever try to look into a shadow under a tree or at sun up or sun down you will be glad you bought a better scope.

poney up the money for a leupold, sightron, 4200 elite etc.

The 2.5-10 4200 elite would be sweet if you don't mind lugging it around. good on the low end good on the high end and very bright.

Myself I have decided portability and FOV beat everything else.

This is why I got the 1.5-5x20 leupy and if I really wanted to go high power I would go with the 1.75-6! a 2-7 is now my most powerful scope and only because it is used for rabbits and they are tiny targets to hit in the head at 100 yards. Big game 4x is plenty. I just doubt you would ever turn any scope past 4 or 6 x in the field on big game.

3x9 zeiss i think have been going cheap thats also great glass.

most scopes around 400 bucks or more are going to be decent.

just think, hunting gun you will carry it way more then shoot it.

Great glass.

I agree! $400 for high quality glass is hard to beat. Although I also believe a smaller magnification would be better for big game.

The "great glass" comments drive me crazy some times. There is a lot more to it than that.

LOTS of scopes have really nice glass nowadays.

I just had a Swift Premier with USA made BAK-7 Schott glass(look up Schott Glass if you don't know who they are) go belly up on me. The glass looked tremendous for it's $250 price tag. As good as more expensive scopes. Problem is, it would not hold zero for anything.

Just buy a Leupold. They come with peace of mind.........

I agree that Leupold scopes are a great value...I own many of them, and have never had any issue with any of them. With that said, I also own a few Zeiss, and consider them to be very good glass as well, (Edited to address 2muchgun's comments. I have never had any issue with a Zeiss' "internals", or experienced any "wandering zeroes" with them either.)although I have had to send one back for repair ("unidentified black foreign matter" on inside of ocular lens). Recently I was in the market for a scope for my Remington R-25 in .243, and had budgeted around $400 for it. After looking at everything that Cabela's had in this price range, I went with the Zeiss 3X9X40 for $399. IMO, it was superior to MY EYE to everything I looked through in that price range, and even though I believe that in optics, like most everything else, you "get what you pay for", it looked better to me than some scopes I looked through that were substantially more money. I think the key when purchasing any optics are to see what "fits your eye" the best, in the price range you are looking in. Everyone's eyes are different, and what is superior to my eye, may not be to yours. After that, consider a Company's reputation and warranty. Both Leupold and Zeiss have excellent reputations and lifetime warranties.

I am a Vortex "fan boy", but they are simply excellent quality optics and the present deal on the Viper's is too sweet to ignore right now. They are discontinuing some of them with certain reticles. $249 for the 6.5-20X44 or $279 for the 6.5-20X50 with target dot reticle.

A great deal on a super scope with incredible company to back it up. There are reasons why Vortex is one of the fastest growing sporting optics companies, quality and value. Check them out and see for yourself. Check the larger shooting forums and see what people have to say. I own three now and would not own anything else in the sub $500 range that is presently available. The Viper's are not $1000 scopes, but the value is self evident.

The Vortex Viper's do not offer the same level of crystalline clarity of Zeiss quality glass, but they are not 2x the price either, nor are they what I would consider seriously less than either.

If you want better optics, then by all means check out Swarovski, Zeiss, Kahles, etc. More money should always gain you better performance from the better optics companies, but there are pockets of real value out there.

You might want to take a look at Hawke Optics scopes. Earl A
Brown Company (www.eabco.com) is doing a closeout on some older models of the Hawke Nite-Eye SR6 scopes for only $200 each. They can be returned if they have not been mounted if you didn't like what you see. I have a 3X12X50 on my Remington 700 .270 hunting rifle and really like it a lot. The clarity is excellent, they hold zero extremely well and have a lifetime warranty. Hawke Optics has over 50% of the European market which most likely makes them bigger than Leupold is here in the U.S. I have nine Hawke scopes and no longer buy anything else because you get so much scope for your money. The Hawke factory website is www.hawkeoptics.com if you want to see what the reticles look like on a coyote, a deer or a moose.

Now is the time to RUN to your nearest Leupold dealer. For you will soon have a recommendation to buy every different POS scope on the planet.........
