I'm getting a custom AR!

Well, after many years of waiting, I am finally getting a custom AR. I decided to get one in a .204 caliber (I have plenty of .223 calibers). I am having Danny Cheatham build it from OK. edited to delete. I decided to go with the Jewel 2 stage trigger (it's what I like), but I have to select a stock for it. What are some of your favorites, and why? I am not sure if I would like the comfort of a collapsible stock. I also decided to go with a 20 inch barrel, as I am looking to slow the 204 down a little anyway (the 204 that I currently have tears up the fox). I really like the shorter barrels. Any input on stock selection would be appreciated.

I just put an ACE stock on my newest AR build. I would have liked to try the adjustable MagPul stock, but it is way out of my price range..

OldTurtle,

Thanks for the reply. I have heard a lot of good things about the ACE stock. What are some of the benefits that the Magpul offers over the ACE? One of my concerns with some of the adjustables is the weight. They look like the would be alot lighter in the rear, which would almost give it an off balanced feel?

Mike, you're right (in my opinion) about the adjustables making the rifle "nose-heavy". Granted, I haven't tried them all and some might be better than others weight-wise, but I am most happy with a good-ole A2 stock on my rifles. They are available in a myraid of colors and camos, and best of all, if you decide later on that you're going to go another route, the A2 stocks are very easy to sell. I would suggest that you try one first, before you do anything else. Ask Byron South how me likes the A2.....that's all I've ever seen him use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just now? I woulda had the best one money could buy long before you even knew what an FX5 was if I was foxpro, and not in Cali. Hope everything goes well and you get it fast.

Also, what about the Vltor sliding stock? It looks like it would be another possible choice?
I also wanted to add that when this project is done, I would love to have Mike Milli build me one to. I had the opportunity to chat with him at last years PM hunt, and think he would do an awesome job as well. He is very passionate about what he does as well.

Hidalgo,

Thanks for your reply. I keep thinking about just the standard stock myself, but it's a hard decision when you are actually paying to have one built.

t/c223encore,

I have never been much of one for a custom gun, to this point. I have always been happy with the groups I get out of the box. When I can get sub-1 inch groups from factory ammo, it was good enough for me, and I have been shooting since a very young age. Also, AR's are not legal in my state, but I have been traveling a good bit for the past few years to other states where they are legal. Plus, I want to see for myself what all the rave is about with these custom guns, and give some of the custom guys all the support I can. I can already tell that it is going to be a fun and educational process.

Mike, I went with the ACE as it was put on an upper that Mike Milli built for me for the purpose of shooting Prairie Dogs and range work and therefore will be supported on the front end (bipod or bags) so balance won't be an issue.

My "coyote" AR is a small M4 carbine with an EO-Tech and the collapsible stock so I can adjust it for the clothing I'm wearing at the time and the MagPul was desired for the ability to get a great or more comfortable cheek weld in lieu of the ACE.

My DPMS that I use for action competitions has the standard A2 stock and it works really well and allows me to add additional weight to the rear portion in the accessory door if I feel the need for even more balance. With the exception of the M4, all of my ARs have the EOP platform on the upper receiver, just for my own comfort and ability to swap scopes using Warne Quick Detach rings.

All I can suggest is to try them all out for 'feel' and go with what suits you the best. Since you are going all out on a good custom, it will pay in the long run to take your time in the selection.

If you were closer to MO, I'd be happy to let you swap my lowers/uppers around and try them all.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd start with an A2. You'll prolly want to tweak it after you get it, custom or not, and buttstocks are easy to change. The little storage compartment in the A2s are handy. I highly recommend a hydraulic buffer too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I haven't tried them all, but I did have a colapsable stock. Didn't care for it due to not being able to use a rear bag when shooting off a bench. I went to the A2 for just that reason.

Another good point. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif The collapsibles are NOT great bench supports. Been there, done that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

t/c223encore,

I just so happened to come upon a lower. The lower will need an upper, so I took it as an opportunity to get one built, and judge for myself.

Thanks for all the reply's. I agree that since I shoot most often off of sticks that it might not matter about weight, but I also think that it may just take some adjusting to a lighter rear end.
I know one thing that concerns me about some of the collapsibles are the edges. They seem like the could get caught up pretty easy when walking through some thick stuff, or just feel awkward against your cheek?

This is what my DTech wound up looking like:

The lower is from CMMG with a Chip McCormick trigger and G-27 grip and, of course, the ACE stock.

Hopefully the weather will stabilize with limited wind and the range will get used in the next few days.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mike,

If you want a fixed stock I would go with the ACE, but if you want a collapsable I would take a hard look the LMT SOPMOD, it has the best cheekweld of any of its kind...including the VLTOR and it has a nice rubber butpad included.

TTFIJI,

Thanks for the information. Nice looking gun, by the way. If I were to go to a collapsible, I would want one that shouldered comfortably, and also one that I could comfortably settle into.
It looks like you are using the Larue Tactical Scope mounts. That is currently what I am using, and I love them. They are a great company.

Mike here is a pic of the 204 upper that Danny built me. It has a 21" barrel and is turned to .660 infront and under the handguard. I also like the Ace stock. I have a 6 position on one of my lowers and I also like it for the 223 16" fluted barreled upper that rides on top of it.

Regards
Kelly

PS - the 204 witht the 35 gr bergers stays in cats and coyotes, but will exit on fox.

Nice gun Kelly. I have not tried the 35 bergers yet out of my current .204. I will be soon. I also am going with a thinner barrel. I would much rather have a lighter weight gun. Are you able to settle in ok with the Ace?

Mike,

I really like the sopmod stock, it to me
has a better cheekweld than my ACE or regualar A2. I also like that I can adjust it forward or backward(length of pull)to help with eye relief on different optics or for different people. I would just try and find a place that you can try the different stocks and see what suits ya best! Good Luck

Josh
