I don't have anything against the "outfitters" out there...they have their market.

BUT, if I were a newbie looking to LEARN how to call, I would spend my money with someone that takes time to TEACH calling, rather than take me out to shoot lots of animals. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I know enough about Tony that he will take care of his family no matter what. Will this venture work? I don't know. But I am just wrapping up a 34 year career next week and I can tell you one thing for sure Tony. When you are on your death bed sucking the last couple of gulps of air out the oxygen tank you won't be thinking "man, I am glad I played it safe my whole life and never just went for it"



Tony this is for you. It is one of my all time favorite quotes written April 1910 by Theodore Roosevelt. If you have an office I would consider hanging it over the door.

This thread has taken a surprising direction. Maybe it is a good practice run through critics. It sounds like you have thought this thorugh, Tony, and I'm impressed that you are going for it. Of course it is risky. Du-uh.

Some of us have taught predator calling courses in Junior college and through sports stores. There is a market, not huge but growing, and it is fun seeing people learn. People cash in on their knowledge every day. There is no prostitution in that. The riskiest ones are people who cash in on something they love to do, because it can cloud business judgment, but Tony sounds fully aware of that. That's why most specialty topic magazines fail.

Whether mentor, books, magazine, video or TV, I doubt that there is one person here who has learned predator calling totally solo. If there is, I'll bet most of us could teach him a thing or two. We all take short cuts to learn when we can.

I have a friend who figured out a call I'd never heard of for mule deer bucks. He told me how he does it and demonstrated it over the phone. I killed a 4x4 mule buck with it, partly because he taught me a new wrinkle, and partly because after 45 years of hunting mule deer I knew how to use that tidbit of sound in the bush. Was that cheating? Was it totally from having someone teach me?

And no, I'm not going to pass it on. Not yet anyway.

Toughen up your hide Tony and go for it. If it doesn't pay the bills, you will know that from experience rather than wondering, and go on to something else. Meanwhile it will make life and your job enjoyable.

Its worth a try and worst case you will dust your shoulder off and look for another job and maybe move again. You do only live once and being happy during that time is the most important thing. How I feel about what your doing don't mater pal,
We may have never met in person but you have always been a good guy on this sight, you are always there trying to give input to the new predator hunter or congratulating one's that post a photo or tells a story about there success .
Bottom line is your a good guy, and again we haven't met but i consider you a pal ....

This is a very bad idea. I wish you would have thought this thru. You don't know anything about calling coyotes. I hope you can live with yourself after making such a "fly by the seat of your pants" decision.

Ok all BS aside, I'm stoked about this. Then I find out Dalton gets to hunt free for the next 5 years. HELLYA!!!! You know I'm coming to hunt every year. The way I see it, is if I called you and said, "hey we need to get a trip to Utah in this year", it would cost me about the same money. I'm not coming to hunt with you because I can't call in coyotes in Perryton. I'm coming because you are a friend of mine and any other trip we take is going to cost me money. How much cash do we spend going to Eastern Ok. every year its a lot, but we go any way. How much money do you spend coming to hunt with me and Moonlight Madness, its awash if you ask me. There are plenty of guys out there that have cash to blow on hunting. By the way, if they know you they know they are not clients. They are hunting buddies that are going to have one hellava good time. Best of Luck Brother. Hold your head high you are going to be a Texan soon.



One more thing, do you provide the baby wipes or do I need to bring my own. Swamp A$$ gets pretty bad after the first day... HaHaHa!!!!

Well I've gotta say after having Tony as my hunting partner for the past six years, Im pretty bumbed out that he is moving /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. But if theres anything Tony was born to do its to take on this buisness venture. Tony was the first to ever take me hunting, and the best partner(friend) one could ask for. He has tought me more than I ever could have on my own. From building calls, I've seen Tony build so many calls I could probably do it with my eyes shut. Then theres every thing he tought me about calling in all sorts of animals, coyote of course fox, bobcat and coon. Then theres turkey season he was always up for those gobblers. Just an emormous amount of knowledge that he tought me.I dont think I cuold ever repay him for everything hes done for me.

To all of those who do book hunts or do the predator university it will be well worth the time and the money. I can tell you that you will not be disapionted. As far as I'm consurned he's the best man for the job.

Last thing I want to say is thanks for being a great mentor, hunting partner and friend. You will certainly be missed here in Iowa. But if I know Tony like I think I do, I don't think he will have a problem getting this buisness going. Like hunter said theres always people with alot of money who love to hunt. You can bet on me coming down to visit at least once a year, and moonlight madness I'll just stop by and pick you up on the way there. Well the best of luck to you my friend. no doubt in my mind that you will make this work. Mentoring you from a guy who never hunted anything in his life, to a guy who has been with me every weekend calling coyotes in Iowa...and shot most of them, has gone to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas with me on calling trips, who has killed his first cat in Kansas, ran the video camera while Todd and I took 3rd place in the Kansas competition hunt, and called in his first coyote for a group of guys in Texas, while I was on another stand, as well as being the gunner/star in almost every piece of calling footage that I've filmed...has been my inspiration to start this school. You have came a long way!

Heck, of the 322 coyotes, last season, you have been by my side for 200+ of them. You will make a great hunter...predator or anything else. You have the patience, determination, and passion. I'm not even going to get into the number of hours you've spent in my shop, watching, learning, helping, and listening to me make and blow calls....or the turkeys and mushrooms we've hunted together. Or how many countless nights you went with me to howl up coyotes.

You will continue to be my best friend....no matter how many miles may come between us. You are the only reason I'll be sad for leaving Iowa. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif If life deals you a bad card...Dawn and I will put a roof over your head and welcome you with open arms in Texas.

Texas hunting laws are more "frendly" towards what you can do....Probably because of all the private land there.

You can hunt at night, etc. in Texas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I wish more of the western states would trash their game laws & take a looong look at how Texas does things.

Yes...322. Anyone who's called with me knows that I'm a predator "caller"....others can shoot them. I keep track of how many we call up, as I usually call and run the camera. Calling them up is where I get my 'high'. I'd say about 1/3 to 1/2 were shot...and only a dozen or so were skinned. Only 13 were from Iowa.

I've heard even if he sees a glimmer of eyes, that's a count of 1. Could be a cow. Doesn't matter if it's taken or called in, or spotted a mile off. But, yea, that's still a lot of coyotes "seen".
Bunch of BS. Just like going to a state with 99% private land and paying landowners; educating paying students while educating predators; while touting all this experience (ie: cat cherry was popped last year?). That's not jealousy, fellas. That's, admittedly, frustration. An idea like this is hurting himself, us and his/our kids. Jump on me and the leg-humping band-wagon all you want boys, this texan can't keep his mouth shut any longer. I don't expect folks who don't have to ask for hunting permission to understand. Actaully, I don't expect anyone to understand. We all have our opinions on a subject like this, and this is mine.

For what it's worth, it's not the man I have a problem with; it's the situation. I'm sure Tony is a great guy, and one of his cow tips hangs from my lanyard.

yes texas suck's for hunting. but you texan's made it that way. i lived there in 1980. wasnt much private land then. if you were a farmer would you do crop's or get paid for people hunting your land. if Tony doesnt do this there will be other's many other's. Rick

Probably MORE public land in Texas now than there was in 1980 (land granted to the state for parks, etc). I've lived here all of my life and the vast majority of Texas has ALWAYS been privately owned. I work with land tracts and how the title was owned on a daily basis....I think I have a fair bit of knowledge about it.
