Title says it. Is a .17 HMR enough for calling/ effectively killing coyotes? I am on a tight budget and curious if ttgat would do the trick?

Its a new year!!!

I popped a dinosaur in my backyard with my 17HMR, unfortunately I pulled the shot and hit him in the butt. He did a back flip, landed in the yard, shook the ground, I fell off the porch and rolled right up to his face. He exhaled one last time and DRT.

Should be fine with deer, just shoot them in the butt.

You are going to find out that the 17HMR is the most hated cartridge ever developed, if you listen to most of the posters on here. Is it the best choice for coyote hunting....no. Will it kill a coyote....yes. I used a 17HMR for my farm gun for several years, carrying it in the truck, on the 4-wheeler, and on the tractor. I probably shot and killed a dozen coyotes with it. All were one shot kills at ranges of a 100 yards or less. Most of the posters who will say not to use it, have never used one. I don't use the 17HMR anymore to hunt with, but if it's all I had, I would use it and never think twice about it.

Well, after that story, I won't mention Cape Buffalo

Not my 1st,2nd or 3rd choice but I have shot several coyotes around my house with mine. My shots are usually 50 yards or less.

Thanks guys. Like I said, on a tight budget and was curious. most of my ranges will be 100 yrds give or take a few. Hunting the hills of ohio and usually would be close. I've killed several with a shotgun, but am wantin fb to get more serious into. Looking into a few 22-250's. Although my preferred gun would be an r-15

I think the majority here would agree that the 17 HMR is not recommended. Some don't even think the 17 centerfires are enough, and some feel the need for a 243.

Being on a tight budget and only shooting 100 yards or such, I recommend a used 223 or 22-250.

I am surprised this 17 HMR isn't a sticky by now.

Just use your shotgun until you get a good center fire.

If you wanna waste your time trying to find the ones that spun off to the next zip code then yes I have killed a few with it then graduated to a 12 gauge.

I think most are aware of feelings towards the HMR and humane coyote hunting. I thought this post was a New Years bit of humor, now I'm not to sure.

The admin tried to sticky the hmr, but the sticky couldn't hold up to the recoil.

I run my 17hmr out to 800 yards all the time on coyotes,
hammers them.....

In real life, maybe good for a 50 yard shot if hit correctly.

Come on guys, give the man a break. After all it is the new years, he's probably still on a hangover.. Nah just kidding, if its all ya got then so be it. [beeep] if its all I had I would shoot first and ask questions later.. But I would seriously advise getting a good 223 or 22-250.
