LED Hunting Lights

What do you want to end up with, seems like a lot of extra stuff?

No. A white LED produces very little light in the red spectrum (unlike an incandescant light bulb). So a red lens filter on an LED doesn't let much red light out. If you want red light from an LED, then use a red LED.

I doubt if the red module from LightHound is anything different from the DealExtreme (DX) module in their red light. Recent orders filled by DX do not contain the Luxeon LED anymore, instead, it is a Cree module.
The LightHound description is incorrect. Cree does not make a red LED in the XR-E series. The WC bin/flux code corresponds to a cool white LED. Apparently, LH stated the same "model" code that they use for their white LED module (including the 225 lumens), then stated that it was red LED. A Cree red LED would be either from the XP-E series or the XR-C series.

Just to add to Pacecars post.

Lumens don't matter, they are a useless measure when it comes to a light to be used for hunting.

Lumens is the total of the overall amount of light. Lux is the measurement of focused light.

Take your light and shine it on a wall. As you walk closer your lux measurement will change but you still have the same lumens.

You can find all the Cree specs on there site. There is no way to modify the lumens on these LEDs. You can focus those lumens and increase the lux measurement.

Thanks for the knowledge guys. I'm glad we have some experts in the field on here. I have been searching candlepower forums and seen a few posts from "Pacecar" little did I know he was a hunter.

Ran across this too.
Brinyte BR01

Could you couple this with an aspheric lens ? Seems like it would be brighter than the wf-501b?

The reason I havent jumped the gun is because I want to be happy and buy something I am going to like. I want to be able to pick up eyes at 250 yards. Could I do this with the aspheric red wf-501b?

I think that the Brinyte BR01 has a very good red LED in it. The specs say it is an XP-E N4 flux bin (a modern, high-performance version). That's probably the same red LED that is used in the XLR-250 and/or the Sniper Hawg Lights Destroyer. The BR01 driver operates it at 1000 mA (1 amp) [the XLR-250 and Destroyer drivers run the LED a little harder, around 1.4 amps]. However, the reflector system of that BR01 light isn't optimized for throw.
It would be nice if someone were to experiment with the BR01 and find an aspheric optic lens of the correct focal length. If successful, it could prove to have more focused throw than the XLR-250 or the Destroyer.

I scan with the $20 headlamp that has been discussed on here and with the right filter I can pick up eyes 3-400 yards away. I used this the second half of NY season with great results.

Just after fox closed last year I switched to a shooting light with the same Q5 buld as the headlamp and an amber filter. This was good to 150 yards. Chased coyotes for rest of season and had numerous fox coming in that could have easily been shot.

This year I'm scanning with the same headlamp and shooting with the red 501b and the aspheric lens. This is good to 100 yards or so. I have a second light with Q5 LED in amber or white light if I need to extend the range.

Rifles aren't allowed for predators during NY deer season in the areas I hunt. Deer closes next week and I'll know better how it performs but I'm sure it'll work out.

I have that Brinyte and it's the only light I've had problems with. Maybe I got a lemon but it changes modes and turns on and off like it has a mind of it's own.

Pmack are you picking up eyes at 100 yards or can you pick up eyes further than that?

Im tired of lugging around the battery packs.

The pint sized Olight M-20 Crimson Red Led only puts out 105 ANSI lumens OTF with the Cree XP-E R2 RED LED and it is as strong as the KLR-250. Retinas light up at 300 yards.

Not only works great on 'yotes out to 250 yards, but piney woods rooters too!

I still remember the old days when I'd have to wait til there was a full moon and snow down to call critters at night. With an old tape recorder I might add. My times have changed. Come to think of it I killed a heck of alot of fox back then without all this high tech gear we use these days.

Oh geeze old timer

I brought home some night vision from work and my dad was amazed. If you ever have a chance to check out that in the woods, you should.
