Let's start a dictionary of our lingo....

i cant imagine what life would be like in a place where there is almost no public land to go camping, hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling anytime i wanted to. where everything is private and you have to pay to do those kinds of things. you can keep the cheap houses and jobs.

peg leg or tripod. coyote missing a leg.

For someone who doesn't like to contribute to derails, I sure seem to be doing it a lot in his thread. Texas has around 2.7m acres that belong to the government. As poorly as they manage most things under their control, I can't imagine why they would need more. There are actually lots of interesting hiking and camping opportunities here, and tons of lakes and coastline for fishing and waterfowl. As for hunting, my place is small, less than 200 acres, but by being honest, responsible, and respectful I have access to several thousand acres for predator and hog hunting that costs me nothing financially.

Texas isn't for everyone, heck if you ask me it's gettin too crowded as it is, but for hunting and fishing, we neither need or want the governments help or involvement.

He frequently angers even our own pro hunting friends till they figure out what the heck he is actually talking about. When people hear the word "dog" they think of lassie and nothing else. How we refer to these animals can either gain support or alienate folks who we may not even realize are listening to us talk. Sorry for the rant but I have personally seen this reaction too many times. The antis love nothing more than lifting a quote off of a site like this where someone is talking about "killing dogs" and then using it against us. Just my two cents.

In all honesty I will never stop using the word dog, simply because where I come from.... People know what you mean.

Thank god I live in Montana where the antis are few and far between, but to my original point, try this experiment next time you are in the grocery store. Proudly say to the person next to you that you just shot a big coyote this morning and you will probably get a congratulation. Now wait five minutes, stand in the same line and proudly proclaim that you shot a nice dog this morning. Let me know how that works out for you!

I don't ever apologize for my hunting and trapping but I am smart enough to realize that there are lots of little things that I can personally do to influence peoples opinions and perceptions about those activities.

Busted.... beat by an animal with a brain the size of a walnut.
thumbup.gif

Winded.... Busted by an animal that "smells better" than you do
thumbup.gif

Scent cone.....the downwind area containing your stank.
thumbup.gif

Stretcher.... holder for the outside of a coyote.
thumbup.gif

BACKWASH : the reflecting IR light from brush or other obstacles back to a Night vision device resulting in no ability to see beyond the obstruction

Whiteout......the smoke-like view you get with some of the digital night vision scopes once the rifle trigger is pulled, causing loss of view.

"Dry" or "empty" stand:
A stand where I didn't call in a coyote (at least that I knew of).

A "chuckler":
I don't hear this term used much by predator callers, although I still use it occasionally. My usage is a remnant of my greyhound hunting youth. When my Dad refered to a "Chuckler", it was a young coyote who, when being chased, would keep looking over it's shoulder while running...as if it was laughing at us.
My use of the term, while calling, refers to a coyote who doesn't run away after being shot at & missed...giving you extra chances to correct your shooting.

A "draw":
A draw is a less developed stream course than a valley. In a draw, there is essentially no level ground and, therefore, little or no maneuver room within its confines. If you are standing in a draw, the ground slopes upward in three directions and downward in the other direction. A draw could be considered as the initial formation of a valley. The contour lines depicting a draw are U-shaped or V-shaped, pointing toward high ground.

How about Zombie Dog... for a mangy one...seems like there are several other names for them...

maybe the Best description is a Hillary?

And of course.... A Hard Charger

A $50.00 Bill.... a coyote killed in Utah for the Bounty.

A Back Stabber.... one the comes up behind you without you knowing it... catching you by surprise.

I had a Big Foot Day... I hunted all day and saw nothing... coyotes seem to be a Myth.

A Jelly Belly... when the bullet blows up everything inside turning it into jelly.

A Turd.... a Newbie that just missed a chip shot.

Well said. We've got it made for sure. I think we should stop talking about it though and get back to the thread.... I'm guilty too not pointing fingers.
