Maine Predator Hunters (night hunt cats and fox)

Well,
Thats just a idea about raising the coyote night hunting permit.Another option would be to just change it to a predator permit that allowed hunting @ night along with certain restrictions like must have a handheld or electric caller while in the field,a certain gauge shotgun or rifle restriction etc etc
I just thought the state would probably be more inclined to listen if there was a couple more dollars they could collect since they always seem to be looking for a dollar or two.As they say money talks BS walks
I think if we got a association(or club)going and got in with the Maine Trappers Association we would probably do alright since most people that trap also hunt. With the prices of fur the way it is most people dont want to invest the money or time in trapping equiptment even though some of us do it every year just to do it and to keep it alive.
If we could get in with them (MTA)I personaly think it would be a huge plus for us since they already offer a subscription to the Trapper and Predator Caller, they have someone in Augusta looking out for them so there fore they have a voice there already.
The bottom line is the harvesting of predators just in different ways.Weather for fur or just to be out of doors it comes down(to me anyways)to the same thing.
where did I put that open-reed underwater muskrat call at?

Unity is the key, I think it would be beneficial for you to work with the Main Trappers Association. If you get something going and need the support of predator callers and/or trappers from my neck of the woods please don't hesitate to ask, I have worked with some of the great guys in Maine and the MTA on issues that pertained to Indiana so I'd be happy to return the favor.

Thanks; Jason

Thanks jrbhunter,
Iam sure we can use all the help we can get in order to get this going, between Trappers weekend and the MTA weekend coming up maybe we can get someones attention from the MTA.Hows about it guys?Iam not a big talker really but it seems like something we could do and is realistic if we could pull it together.

Well guys, what do YOU think?????I personaly think it would be a win/win situation for all.How about it? Mainekiller is willing to bring it to the MTA table for us

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gifHas anybody heard from the rest of the guys on this?
vaportrail,yotersden,hammerless99,skinnerme? I'm in for sure

I e-mailed yoters den and one other and yoters den /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifwill do what they can with running a store and all but I would say we have there support,Iam heading to the state rondy, the wife and I are spending the weekend /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

What do you guys think about a get together in the near future???If we get accepted or not by the MTA we have to start somewhere /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

MeTrapper,
Getting together sounds great! I'd take some vacation time if it happens during the week. And I'd be willing to travel a bit to help get this association going. I think we could learn from each other as well as establishing a voice in Maine Dept. of F&W that would allow us more hunting options.

I wish we could hear from ALL the Maine people that use Predator Masters on this thread.

He Mainetrapper, look for me up at the Rondy, I will be the only guy in a yankees cap. John Sewell, and I am the downeast director.
I will also get this topic on the official agenda for the directors meeting. I don't know if there is a question about getting accepted by the MTA but we can make our plans known to them and see what the feedback will be. I will state that we are trying to start a predator hunting org (Maine Predator Hunters Association, MPHA)and our intentions are for expanded opportunity to hunt predators in Maine, specifically night hunting for fox and cats to go along with the coyote. We will have to talk about seasons but I think the best and most accepted season dates for this are the ones I mentioned in the 1st post of this thread
Let me know if there are other org names we might consider. Also, everyone who supports this should e-mail or PM me with your name and address so we can get a list started. johnsewell44@hotmail.com
My wife just had our first son this weekend so things are a bit hectic. I will talk more later.

You guys have my support, but it probly don't count for much being as I live North of the border.I'd love to get down to Maine for some nite-huntin,even just for coyotes,as the Dictatorship here only allows nite-hunting for coons with hounds.

Maybe you could start an on-line poll here to see how many other out-of-state hunters would be willing to come to Maine and spend their tourist dollars on the opportunity to hunt at nite?Politicians like to see that kind of stuff, yes?

Good luck on your quest and congrats to you John and your wife.

The boy and mom are doing well and thanks for the replys.

I think we may have to change our plans on presenting at the fall rondy. I have talked to a few people and the consesus is to wait on this topic until we have a true directors meeting. The meeting at the rondy is an open meeting and this subject may not be the best thing to present with so many members attending, not because of controversy but time restrictions. My father who is the MTA secretary also stated that the MTA does not need to be notified of our intentions but it would be a good topic at the next directors meeting. We would like to have there support (and many clubs other clubs support) and this would be the main reason for bringing it up. So, I am thinking of holding off until we get more organized and come up with a long list of potential members and a true mission statement or specific agenda.
Keep those names and addresses coming and the conversation going and we will go from there. Hope this is ok and I will be checking in soon. Thanks guys!

Here he is (Cyrus John Sewell), although he is a little mad. He already likes FFG.

He is a little more happy here.

mainekiller,
Great pics, you must be very proud. A big congrats from a "former" washington county native! Glad to hear Mom and son are doing well. I'm sure you'll have him in camo before to much longer. Take care and thanks for the update!!

If this forum is the only place this is being discussed then we aren't going to get too far. I think we need to broaden out interest base to generate a louder voice.
Mainekiller- do you have a tally of Mainers that have replied on this issue?
I'm wondering if a small add in the Maine Woodsman or FFG requesting replies for interest in preditor/varmint hunting would help? Maybe contacting that group that orginized the Coyote Derby last winter in Wash. Co. to get a list of participants.
Maybe SAM, MTA, ME F&G Dept. would allow an info/sign up sheet at the annual Sportsmans Show that is held @ UM this year.
Any other ideas?
