Muzzle Loader Questions

Thanks Tim!

It got replaced a while back by another rocklock.

So do you feel the same way about Remmington. I know you have been a strong supporter of remmy's in the past but your reason here is that they are jusnk as they may blow up in your face.....Is this the stance you take with Remmy's also now. I am looking for clarifications in the matter. But you are not the first person I have had tell me not to go CVA's direction.

IMO, anytime you're willing to pour granular or stick explosive in a small diameter tube and compress it with a chunk of lead wrapped in copper and backed by plastic and put a spark through a pin hole and ignite it, you take a chance at it blowing up in your face. That being said, all guns have a potential for danger.

I have a Knight Wolverine that was sighted in once about 15yrs ago and hasn't changed yet. I have killed most everything I shot at with it and my mother is using it now. I wanted to replace it with something a little newer with a sealed primer area and bought a T/C Omega. It shot like crap until I found the right combination. It is now my meat getter. I've only missed one deer since I had it and found out I blew out the reticle in the Pentax it was wearing. It hasn't missed since I replaced the scope. I have the thumbhole model Z5 and have Duracoated it since it wouldn't quit rusting. I'd flame T/C for their blueing practices, but have noticed nobody makes a decent priced blued rifle anymore that will hold a finish. Duracoat has been my friend the last few year, LOL. The only thing about my Omega that might not be good for predators is the 28" long barrel. While it balances well, it doesn't do much for you when crawling around in the brush.

As for the CVA's, I've never owned one or really looked into them. Between the people I know, they own a total of 5 of the $149 Wolf muzzleloaders. Every one of them shoots as good as my T/C at 50-100yds with powerbelts, and all of them have a nice ergonomic grip. They do feel cheap and the finishes are crap on them as well, but they were cheap in comparison to my Omega and perform equal to it. I have shot one of them and must admit, it does handle easier in tight quarters and transports much easier than my smoke cannon.

Of course I gotta include some bragging shots of the T/C

While it appears that more people are not fans of CVA a gun blowing up in your face is a gun blowing up in your face and it appears that both CVA and Remmy have had those problems in the recent past. At the very least both have malfunctioned and harmed someone because of a manufactures problem. I do not see how this is any different. Remmy had a problem with the trigger way back in the 40's, they decided to keep the malfanctioning trigger and replace some of their parts to get the patent pushed through, which they did......yikes.

You know I am not a remmy fan cause we have discussed it at length several times. I just wonder why CVA is trash to you for some of the very same saftey issues Remmy has had for a very long time and choose not to fix cause it would cost too much money. I am no smith or super knowledgable expert but wondered if you would shed some light on why you feel they differ so much?

This thread has nothing to do with Remington. I see no similarities in the 2 products/companies or their quality, or how they are produced. None. I also do not have a clue as to what "very same safety issues" you mean?

Best we stop this train before the wreck, because we both know where it is headed---to the scene of the crash.........

I appreciate your comments. It is nice to see real comparisons of your TC and the CVA. While I am still leaning away from CVA from ratings others have given this is helpful. But who knows it appears it is the lower end stuff people are telling me to stay away from and the higher end stuff that everyone likes..

I'm off until Monday. Got the new 260 here and the new custom bipod. Was gonna shoot this week, but it is frickin' freezin' out, flurries, windy, just nasty. It was 4° when I got up. It's supposed to stay in the teens/single digits for 4 more days or more.........

I've been watching out the window for Fedex. My NF is coming today, but while I'm at work I guess. Punched out the trigger pins n'such out of my ss action today. Getting ready for the "bat cave "....

I was just referring to you stating that the CVA has in the past had a problem with rifles blowing apart due to poor thread quality of the barrel. This is obviously dangerous...I agree.

But then the Remmy has serious and dangerous problems with it's triggers going boom when someone takes it off of saftey and not having their finger anywhere near the trigger. Unsafe with a fire arm is unsafe period. Their product quality in both cases is not good and both present dangerous issues to anyone that takes a chance with the product knowing they have these issues. I am not a remmy fan but it is not the quality of the rifle in question rather the trigger and it's saftey issues. I am not poking at Remingtons rifles just the trigger. My bro is a remmy fan and good on him just not for me is all. I am looking for your opinion as to why the CVA is so poor and the Remmy is so superior to others based upon the above statements. You are a smart person and I am not demeaning you I just can't see the difference so I want you to verbalize how you feel it is different. To me saftey issues with guns no matter the brand is a huge issue as it could cost me or someone else their life. For that very reason after reading several articles on CVA stuff I most likely will shy away from those folks. It is cool if you want to wash your hands of this I don't care either way, I do not want to stir the pot and will move on. Have a good one.

Tim it is not stupid is as stupid does because there are hundreds of malfunction reports due to poor quality triggers that remmy has used for a long time. It's not just stupid people, I am with you though that is some really dumb people creating bad press for every company but lets all be honest Remington has a serious problem, don't you think. Or do you really feel that the person who takes the saftey off the gun and it goes off is the one to blame?

I do like the looks of the knight rifle in camo with the nickel colored barrel....wow that is a pretty fine looking gun. What do you know 2much and I agree on something....JK. When looking at the CVA next to the Knight nickel plating the knight lookes like it is polished chrome in comparison.

It's always the bad that comes out in the press. Never hear good stuff like.....
GM sold 10 million trucks 100% perfect ! No it's the few bad anything that spoil the batch.

Bad news sells ,as the say.
