Just a couple of thoughts here.
One, the 22 Hornet is a good chambering for us old guys. By that I mean it was the first cartridge I started loading for. It is more difficult to find a good load that shoots however. It's tempremental, to say the least, and really doesn't offer much more than a 22 Mag. I'd say, for your next rifle, a 223 would be perfect. I find it difficult to try a load that doesn't shoot, they are that good. I don't own a 204, but that has nothing to do with it's excellent accuracy and killing power for 'yotes. I've limited the number of different chamberings I have as I have too many now.
On Rifles. I have no Savage rifles, only Remington 700's and one Model 7, in 223, two Weatherby Vanguards, and one CZ 527 in 223. All shoot extremely well. Benchrest shooters either use Rem 700/40x, or custom actions using the Rem 700 bolt. That should tell you something right there.
I'm a tester at heart. When the Weatherby Vanguard was found to be the most accurate rifle out of the box by one of the shooting magazines a few yesr ago, I had to have one. I bought one in 223, and found that it is an accurate rifle. So, I bought another in 25-06, also very accurate. I won't buy any more as I'm a Remington guy basically. No other rifle has more aftermarket accessories available than the Rem series, especially the 700. I won't be buying another CZ 527 either; same reason as above.
My advice would be, buy a Rem 700 in 223. I must have a dozen loads for my 223's that will deliver 1/2" groups at 100 yards for 3 shots.
