"For all spot and stalker's " Just some thing I was thinking about?

Funny thing about their behaviors. I've spent many days hunting long & hard. Scanning well over 100 miles of gravel roads. Not seeing a thing.

Whereas, the same day. I read of a guy I know who seen many. Just a county away.

What is pretty much etched in stone where I hunt is. IF I don't see any the 1st couple of hrs. I won't see any the rest of the day. Even after a long day of hunting.

3rd wk in January down here in central Iowa. Coyote breeding season is at it's peak. Around mid February on. About all I ever see are the males. Out hunting or bedded. Females no doubt are hanging close to their den sites. Not traveling far.

yeah i probly would of went there if it would of been a blind call, but i saw them near there when i drove by. So i just went to the back side of the woods. I really thought i was going to do it, but as with coyotes things just are not as easy as it seems.

You are welcome leaddog.

I would say late morning-after 8am, is the best they are more laid back and more then likely sleeping at that time witch is a good thing.."This is in my area anyways"
We did the early morning many times and it seems like they are just getting ready to lay down for the day or picking the area they are going to spend the day..
This is a time you don't want to mess with them at all we learned the hard way..
Just let them get cozy in the area they are in and you will have a much better chance of getting them..
If you do go out in the early am if you see one I would not stop I would drive by and mark the spot some how and head back to him or her in a hour or so..
Let them get cozy and in a deep sleep and it will pay off in the end

Forgot to add a few things,
#1.This time a year in my area anyways, If you see one coyote or one fox more then likely the male-female is very close by so make sure you look long and hard for another.

#2.One other thing if you go after one and you get in to shooting range and you see both try to figure out witch one is the female..

#3.If you can shoot the female first
smile.gif

The male will stick around for you to shot him as well just give it a little time.
Most of the time he will come back.
I would bet you will get him too
smile.gif

#4.Most of the ones we are spotting now there are two male and female witch is super cool in a way.
Down side is that is 4 ears and 4 eyes looking for danger there is a up and down's to this all its hunting I guess..

Just a little luck and lots of time on the road and lots of glassing and knowing your gun it will pay off at some point it always does

Me and a buddy hit the roads today and seen 4 sleeping fox in 94 miles what a good day..
Sorry I did not get a pic with me and my rifle and the fox this is the only pic I have but its a bloody mess and that is sweet I think

froze my arse off this morning. was just gonna go for an hour or 2. spotted a coyote laying on the down-wind side of a big drift next to some standing cornstalks. i figgered this was gonna be easy as pie since it was real windy. from looking the situation over through my spotting scope, it looked like i should be able to get to about 150-200 yards so i broght my .222. the stalk worked out great. got to about 200 and he had no idea i was there. i took into acoound the stong crosswindand shot. i was going for the head. apparently i held to much into the wind as when i shot he JUMPED up and started pawing at his face while up on his hind leggs. i shot again and hit him throught the back legs. than he took off running. long story short was i was'nt dressed proper and had to run him down. finally killed him about 3/4 miles from the truck. by the time i got back to my truck i was as cold as i've been in many years. was afrain i freezer burned my left hand but it seems to be ok now. lesson learen, always expect the worse. coulda been real ugly if it was 20 degrees colder out.

Looks like a classic case of a centerfire orchiectomy?

This am, I was closing the gap on one 3/4 mile out. bedded coyote just over the ridgeline. As I'm working my towards him. Next thing I see is he's running NorWest of me. Come to find out, some other hunter? had spotted him too from the other side of the section. Et spooked him.

I seen that yay-hoo, driving around the far end of the section like a madman, trying to cut the coyote off. Downside to hunting on a wk-end. Every [richard head] is out chasing them down with their truck.

Shot one many yrs ago, long range on deep fluff snow. Coyote ended up being completely covered in blood[except the tip of her tail]. When it was all said & done.

Last shot, hit her carotid. She fell on her side yelping & pumped blood in the air. All over her body, looked like old faithful. Farmer was looking on grinning[they were behind me a little ways]. His young daughter standing by his side. Had her hands over her eyes.

I about crapped when I seen that little girl watching. I didn't know either was behind me. Only because it turned out to be a bloody mess.

I forgot to add I Phil went out yesterday drove about 90 miles till the wind pick up to about 20mph..
Did not see a thing
frown.gif

I new when the winds picked up it was time to head home so we called it a day..
I and another buddy mite head out today for 2 hour's or so and give it another try..
Its low winds today and sunny but dam cold well see what happens..

They were in a big ditch what a great place for them to be out of the wind and in the sun and in the middle of the section.

I got to watch this female fox eat its last meal before I put the smack down..
I did not find that to be to nice of me at all but I was there to hunt my self and that is what I did..
I will say it was sweet to watch it hunt for that mouse in the day time It jumped and boom hit the ground head first and she got her head out of the snow and came up with a fresh kill of her own SWEET and price less..
smile.gif

Thanks miss fox for letting me be a part of that show
smile.gif

Thanks for the story and pics Chris. Is that a Bushnell Banner on that 223? Looks like we are going to have warm temps for this full moon. Nothing to report from friday road trip for me. Stopped at the range and did some shooting.
