I had my close to town area cleaned up, but now there is a group of three making tracks but i have yet to lay eyes on them, our area to the north is void of coyotes. We are hoping to hit 150 so I hope there is a few more around. We could use a little snow to show me some tracks so I know whats left. But i do know there is at least 7-8 on my close loop to town as i found there tracks after this last snow and saw a couple today but they know the game and are back into the big areas and sleeping before I get out after them.

yep, they are getting very wised-up. my best luck is coming from the coyotes migrating off the refuge.why they go west of hwy #9 is beyond me. they must eat dirt
lol.gif
. sure is nice not to need snowshoes

. lots quieter. good shootin NC. shoulda had a .22lr for that one

Good stalk, Chris. You walk in cross-wind, or angled up-wind? on that close one.

There are 3 Red dens down here. All are a mile a part, give or take. I seen one of the pr's got tagged by a vehicle the other day on the highway. Awesome dark cherry pelt, to bad. I'm looking forward to some close-up pup pics in the near future. From the pr's that make it through until then.

Borkon: Yes I wish I had my .22 once I got out there to top that off I had it in the truck..LOL
I was just telling my two buddy's that day I wish I had my .22 with for that stalk lol!!
Ooo well maybe next time!

Fortunately for a stalker, many Reds tend to dismiss ambiant noises. Unlike a coyote.

I've been within 15'+/- of a sleeping Red. Red was clueless. Of course that stalk happended on deep fluff snow. Same as for a few coyotes I stalked yrs ago. Got to within 40-50' of them. One coyote I got so close to, it's fur filled up my scope.

What is neat about wind direction is. Most often the bedded canine is facing to it's down-wind. Or which direction the prevailing wind is blowing to. Not always, but most often.
Thus, a stalker can come in from it's blind side, useing any terrain available. Even if is is slight. Stay low, stay quiet & go slow, pausing often.
