Hey, Richard we missed you. Glad to see you posting. Remember what I said about those calls you're keeping in the hutch. I said "dibs" wayyyyy before Todd, lol.

So, what's the story about the AFB calls made on GFE? I've heard of "G-jobs" before but this sounds like a good story. Fill us in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

NASA, pretty simple, Jack Cain ( Circe Calls ) had barber shop over in Goodyear a few miles from base. Bill Dudley worked on base and I was introduced to him and thru him to JC. I asked JC why the calls were made from the wood they were ( Birch) JC said the only reason was birch turned and machined well, I think some dowel turning machines were used, I then asked about making some out of fancy wood and he said go ahead, give me diamention of drill, base machine shop turned step drill and drilled all our calls we made, we made them on wood lathe at base hobby shop using same dimention as original Circes, took them to JC and he installed reeds. BTW he got his reeds in paper cans with metal lids from Wintress that made them as voices in Dolls, the reeds as they came would blow shut if you really got on them, he would bend lip down on one side so reed could not blow shut and gave the Circe sound. I'm sure winning second place in Arizona field and second place in Arizona championship, then running 4th in world contest even though they only gave trophy to 3 places helped my relationship with Jack Cain, or maybe no one else showed as much interest as I did- plus being friends with Bill Dudley helped.
Richard

Now there's a piece of history that belongs in a book. And those calls were given away as gifts, and not boxed up and sold? How many of those do you figure you guys made up? Were you in the service at the time, or were you a base contractor too.

Hey Richard,

Glad to see you posting again and hope all is well with you. Sorry about the delay on the picture been doing some home improvement.

You offered up some very interesing history lessons there and I'm soaking them all up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nasa where the heck you been denned up at?

Todd, I've been working some serious OT for about 4 months, now. I'm saving a few $$ for a new F/T upper and glass for the A/R. If the OT lasts 'till the end of the year, I may trade the Tacoma in on a real 4X4, lol. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hey, is that pic one of Richard's "Air Force" Circe's?

Hey I'm trying to trade down my 4x4 for a smaller truck like yours.

The picture didnt turn out as good as I hoped so I'll try to take another when I get time.

I'll let Richard explain the history behind this call...but it appears in his earlier years they called him Dick instead of Richard.

Todd

Todd, NASA, yes I was just a pup in AF then, the call Todd shows was one of them, I used that one a lot as my personal call. I progressed from Dick to Richard :>), of course I've been called a few other thngs in my life too- some not so nice. I probably made over 20 calls back then,
If you want a kick in the head I sold a 25# lead shot bag full of calls for $5 quite a few years ago at a garage sale, some original Circes stamped with World calling contest. BTW I just found old B&W picture I took showing Bill Dudley, Doug Kittridge, and Jim Doughtry sp? on stage together at early world contest.
Richard

Richard here's some cool call's from my collection. love Mesqite wood, Richard grantham top and two Richard Grantham Rich Cronk call's. and a old sear's call. glad to hear from you Richard. Rick

Richard, those old B&W pictures should be sent to a photo shop for reproduction. For a few bucks they will create new negatives and digitally clean up the photos. Then they could be posted here and shared with the world. Heck, I'll bet you could sell 8X10's right here as fast as you could have them printed. Hell, I'll front you the money if necessary. Those are true classics!

Rick, I'm just a lowly member, without access or skills to modify a picture in someone else's post. I hope one of the Mod's will help you, though.

Anyone can modify anyones pics. No Mod is needed. All you have to do is right click and save picture as. Then open it in your photo program and edit. Making a picture clearer is a tough one though. Making them lighter or darker is easy.
Rick, back up a few (5-10) inches when taking the pic. Also try holding the button down half way and let the cammera auto focus before depressing the button the rest of the way. Hope t his helps.

Well Richard its nice to know I have one of those 20 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think I have a perty good set of Granthams to include his combo calls. Matter fact I think I have all the combos. Rich am I missing any?

Rick dont we have the only two Cronk/Grantham mini howlers?

Todd

Rick and Todd

If my memory serves me right there were four sets of calls made in the "colaborations".

Rich Grantham and Rich Cronk made two sets, Rich Cronk and Ryan Weiser made one, and Richard Grantham and Krusty (me) made one.

I know there were only two RG/KKs. I see one in Todd's pic, and I have the other (the top one).

I have a call Richard made me, one of the last he made, from redwood.
I believe it's the only redwood call he turned.

Krusty, that redwood really came out nice. That is one difficult type of wood to work with.

NASA,

Yeah you're right, it is difficult to work into anything but kindling.

I was very impressed with Richard's turning skills.

The redwood has wide growth rings, and splits or tears out easily, and this also makes it difficult to sand smooth.

I am just glad nobody got hurt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There's only one thing I don't like about the call, I usually find it in my brother's call bag. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
