Remington 700 VTR

I was looking into the new remington 700 VTR .204 and was wondering what everyone thought of this gun. It looks like a pretty sweet gun, but wanted to know from those of you who have shot one.
Thanks, Tim

I shot one about 2 weeks ago, except it was a 223. It didn't seem much different than the standard Varminter, except the porting made it sound a little different. I was shooting under a roofed structure, so that could be why it sounded different.

I just went and picked mine up, it is in 308 though. I really like the looks of it. I wont be able to shoo it until my order shows up from Midway USA. I will adjust the trigger and float the barrel and bed the action tonight. I cant buy a new gun and not play with it within the fist 10 minutes I own it.:)

I will try to get some pics uploaded tonight or tomorrow.

Tim

Shot 2 five shot groups under an inch off the hood of a truck this AM with my 308,its going to get used on everything but elk this season, cant wait. You can read my VTR data thread here...

I shot mine for the first time today. I got the .223. A local sporting goods store in Portland Oregon had it on sale for $599 with a $50 rebate and free Leupold rings and bases - couldn't pass up that deal.

I tried 4 types of powder, all with the 55 grain vmax. 27.5 grains of Varget produced a .365 5 shot group at 100 yards. The other powders (H335, W742 and BL-C2) were just over an inch for 5 shot groups. Interestingly, the Wisconsin Cartridge 55 grain v-max (loaded bulk in different brands of brass) shot consistent .750 groups. Since my gun liked Varget, I loaded up 27.5 grains with 53 grain Barnes TSX, 55 grain Sierra HP's and 55 grain Nosler Ballistic tips. Going to try them out tomorrow and will report back.

I shot the groups today before I adjusted the trigger. The trigger was horrible - must have been 10 lbs. but a simple adjustment got it breaking crisp at 2.5 lbs so I'm optimistic about tomorrow.

There's a good article about them in the current issue of Shooting Times. It was tested in 223, on a VERY windy day and this guy was still shooting some sub half inch groups, and this with factory ammo.

With a MSRP of $805 I'd say you got a darn good deal.

While hunting?Nope.Im not going to reduce my senses to protect my ears from a single shot, thats crazy.

thats what i was thinking but if my ears are ringing after one shot i dont think it would be a gun i would want.

Back from the range. The Nosler 55 grain Ballistic tips shot .650 for 5 shots, The first 3 were a nice cloverleaf. I have 500 of them, so I think I'll load up a few hundred and call it good for now.

The Sierras and TSX were both at an inch - wouldn't hesitate to use either. I did shoot it once without hearing protection and it makes a pretty loud crack, but not enough to cause me any delay in using it as a hunting rifle.

do you fellas with the vtr think its neccasary to use hearing protection with these guns when hunting?

It is necessary to always use hearing protection for every shot with any firearm. Every single shot, even from a 22LR, permanently deletes part of your hearing. If you shoot without protection you will be saying "huh?" a lot when you are older. With the electronic muffs available today there is absolutely no excuse not to use them all the time.

I have fondled one, but never shot one. If it shoots like a normal 700, accuracy will not be a problem.

I personally can not like the brake, nor the triangular fluted barrel, nor the tupperware stock. If you wanted to switch the stock, now you would be stuck, for obvious reasons.

I'll stick with round, un-braked barrels.

Im not wearing anything that restricts my hearing while hunting,no way,not only is it rediculous its unsafe, you need to have all your senses sharp when hunting, you need to hear people who are trying to get your attention or another predator in the woods that might be stalking you.

You can install the VTR action/barrel in any of the aftermarket stocks that are made for the heavy barrele 700 line.Do some research before you start bagging on something.Once again you know everything about something you have never used.

With a lot of work? How much bedding? I know this, the barrel channel is round. The VTR barrel is flat. Seems it would be a royal pain to me. Ever bed a rifle?

Correction, will never use. It is geared toward guys like you, who don't know any better.

I hear for $7 more dollars you can get a NCStar with it.......

The electronic muffs enhance your ability to do that. Not using them will insure your senses will not be sharp in the future.

You want to go deaf fine, go for it. But you should not recommend it to others.

40 years ago we could plead ignorance to hearing loss. Now it is well proven.

1 shot isnt going to make anyone deaf.I have worn a pair of the electronic muffs, they cut my hearing down to about 1/3 of normal when walking out to change targets and standing around waiting for barrels to cool,I would never wear them on a hunt,9/10 I never fire a shot on a BG hunt,Im not going to wear those [beeep] uncomfortable things on the off chance that I will fire a shot and that the single shot is going to do any real damage,Im not concerned about the possible damage a single shot could do to my hearing.Im way more concerne about being able to hear that snapping timber or tinkle of shale when the elk start to move.High rpm tools like saws and air grinders produce more damage to human hearing than almost anything else you are exposed to,a table saw will deafen you faster than shooting. This is my personal preference and I dont know anyone who wears hearing protection beyond the practice range. If the occasional or even often shot was going to damage my hearing i would have been deaf 20 years ago,my hearing is very sharp, better than most people i know.

THEY USE THE SAME STOCK ON THE VTR AS THE OTHER ROUND BARREL 700S,the VTR is a standard 700 heavy barrel with three sides milled off, therfore it needs the same diameter barrel channel as any of the heavy barrels, wow you really have a thick skull dont you.Once again do some research before you share your (expertise) with people looking for facts.Yes we know everything you own is better than what i have and you know more than I do about any topic in the history of man, your arrogance is almost neutralized by your ignorance,almost...Ill try to put together a picture book for you so you can undertstand what those of us with first hand knowledge of the VTR are talking about.

Here are a couple pics for you to use as a reference,i hope you can fathom what you are looking at,this is the VTR and the stock that it comes with, the exact same stock as the mdl 700 short action with the standard round barrel. Can you see the long ROUND barrel channel? Can you understand that any of the aftermarket stocks for a short action 700 with a heavy barrel will work?Probably not....Now go bait your trolling rig for someone else because Im done arguing with the only troll on PM that hasnt been (fixed).

Nonya---a couple of points here:

1) I was not ripping on the rifle at all. I merely stated what I did not prefer about it. Never said it was junk or anything. I don't do brakes, or tupperware, sorry.

2) I can see from your pic about the barrel now. I had one in my paws 2-3 weeks ago at the Sportsmans Whorehouse, but apparently did not look that closely. I also looked on the remington website, where I could not tell either. I see that the bottom of the barrel is in fact round. I had thought that they simply shaved off 3 sides, creating a triangle. My bad.

3) You needn't take everything so personally. My feelers don't get hurt if someone tells me they disagree with my choice of equipment. Man up, it's not like I insulted your family. I can't stand thin skinned guys who can't take a little ribbing without taking their toys and going home.
