WOW!!!! |I have to go along with Dirty Dog and J Mark.
I have shot more moose than most of you have even seen. During over 50 years of hunting, I have had more than one close up and personal encounter with these swamp donkeys. they are big and and stupid and can be dangerous. they will charge anything from a highway rig to a pickup or a train because they want to.
Most of the time when we encounter them they move off. When they don't the SOP is to let them know you are not a moose especially during the rut, if it is a bull.Yelling, waving your arms and revving your truck are all things that work to scare a moose off. The problem is they don't work all the time.
It looks to me like this guy happened onto a moose on his snowmobile track. He tried to scare it off, and instead it attacked him. It did not false charge, it attacked him and jumped onto his sled trying to strike him with it's hooves. It ran off , but turned for another attack. He drew his firearm and fired. I'm impressed that he hit the moose and secondly that he knocked it down. Excellent shooting under pressure.
Next for you people who think the moose is lying there flailing around suffering, I doubt all the animals you've ever shot have hit the ground DRT without flailing around. Can some one tell me how many times they have seen a coyote do the 'death spin'?
This animal is a heck of a lot bigger than a coyote. They do not hit the ground dead. They will thrash for a few minutes even when shot in the heart or the neck. That's not speculation , that's a fact. I'll bet that moose was dead within a few minutes. If not, I fail to see the problem. He wasn't hunting he was stopping a deadly attack. Once the threat was over he moved away from the situation. What he did then is pure speculation.
For those who think reverse is a good idea. Have you ever used reverse on a sled? How fast do you think he could have backed up down the trail while the moose was charging? What about the sled behind him.
For those who think he should have sat there and done nothing except wait till the moose left, I can give you an educated guess that the moose was not going to leave, he was going to charge.
You say the guy had choices, but so did the moose.Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.
