Now that we are getting quite a few new members to this board, how about conducting a little poll.

1. Favorite brand of rifle

2. Favorite Caliber of rifle

3. Favorite Bullet

I'll Start:

1. For most situations - Remington 700 BDL or Sako

1. For a scabbard rifle on 4 wheeler or horseback and a knock around gun - Remington 788

2. .22/250 and hope to have a wildcat built in either .22/6mmCJ or .243 Ackley.

3. For accuracy and not deforming in your magazine - 55 gr. Nosler ballistic tips

3. For performance on coyotes - 55 gr. Nosler boat tail "Spitzer" soft points.

Jump in here guys. This should be interesting to see what everyone prefers at one site.

1- Ruger Ruger Ruger
(I'm infatuated with them, what can I say)

2- 22-250
(Just plain ole dependable and accurate)

3- Winchester 50 gr. Ballistic Silvertip
(consistent accuracy)
I picked up a box of generic 45 gr. JHP's the other night for plinking at the range. Very impressive shell for the price.

what kind of can o'worms is this? lol

I'm out here still on the lunatic fringe apparently, with my T/C Contender pistol, 14" in .223 with Sierra 55 BTSPs, and now I finally have that 6mmTCU 14" bbl too, but it so far has not been used on a hunt. With both the Nosler 70 BTs and the Hornady 75 V-maxs it turns in over 2500fps and sub-minute groups. Should kill them a little more dead than the 223.

For a rifle I have my Rem 700 BDL .243, coyote load with the Nosler 70 BT. Even though it's the po-folks version, I floated the bbl, bedded it, tuned the trigger, and with my handloads on a good day will keep groups under one inch at 200 yards, so half minute. It's a peach. It shouldn't shoot as good as it does. It makes coyotes very very dead. I also occasionally tote around a 700BDL in 30/06, but I suppose that's not really a calling rifle... that one makes them very very very dead. Too dead in fact.

I love the 700s, and don't see any need for any other rifle model except maybe a T/C Contender, or Encore, or Ruger #1, or, or, or,

This is gonna open up a can of ravenous worms.

1. Evil Black Rifle...And anything Banned from further exportation.

2. .223 of course

3. 55 grain BT

I'm very much looking forward to whacking a few with a 50 year old Mauser or Mosin-Nagant someday. Makes it a little more sporting that way.

Here we all go again...

Rem Model 7 in .243. Probably too much gun, but the 70-gr. Speer TNT at 3180 not exiting at all at 40 yards is encouraging (to me, not the coyote). Leupold 2x7 Vari-X II, camo tape and cloth bow limb cover on the barrel, and a Ching sling. Short, light, handy, accurate, deadly. All I need is some more coyotes to run into the muzzle end.

used my old ruger 77 in 243 forever, and never wanted a better rifle. rebarrelled it once and should have done it again but traded it for an all weather 77- same cal. the new rifle never fit me so now it's the old rifle. got the call this morning and my new m70 classic featherweight has arrived at the dealer. oh yeah it's still in .243..... i aint' gonna jump off that horse.

Savage Striker Stainless-Synthetic Handgun chambered for the .243 Winchester Cartridge. Outfitted with the a Burris 3x12x32mm L.E.R. Plex-P.A. Handgun Scope.

Prefered load for Coyotes (and Varmints in general), 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip over a healthy charge of IMR-4198. Produces 1/2 minute of angle groups (from the bench of course), and minute of Coyote groups from my shooting sticks. Even at a muzzle Velocity of 3100 FPS, this bullet is explosive !

Yep Desert Fox, I'm with ya, I too like Handguns.

Larry

Thats easy! Anything in .17 cal of course!...NOT!

Seriously though, I use a mod 70 Win, stainless synthetic in 22-250 more than anything (covered in paint of course!). Sierra 55 gr HPs are my favorite bullet this season. So far I LUV EM'! Pelt damage has been 0 on about 99% since switching. The coyotes act like the hammer of Thor hit em'. LOL. I am impressed. Hard to find a hole in most.

Next would be my beloved 16" Bushmaster AR-15 with the same bullets.

I'm not sure what is best but I shoot Remingtons have a model 700 classic 17 rem shoot 25 grain HP molly with 23.5 grains of IMR 4320, my plans are to have the barrel reblued to a dull matte finish and get a remington black plastic stock for it, I also shoot a Remington 788, 22-250 with 39 grains of blc2 and a 40 grain v max with molly, the 22-250 will out shoot the 17 for accuracy. I'm down to 1/2 inch groups with the 250 and 3/4 inch groups with the 17, I'm not satisfied with the 17s accuracy yet but I'm working on it.

Well,
I have no hard and fast answers to most of the questions, as there are mainly a selection of really, really close choices out there so we will use trend analysis.

Weapons of choice.

Rifles. I like a few different brands, if I could only stick to one brand it would be the Browning Abolt. I also own a Ruger 77 All Weather, Cooper 21, Tikka 595. Rem 700 might be in the future, have to wait and see. Weatherby might also be on the way, but we will have to wait and see on that one too, yes it is a "Predator" rifle, but not the kind most think of on this board. (Bears are predators) I am a firm beleiver in the bolt action rifles, with the non-bolt action singleshots being a close second.

I do not use automatics, pumps, levers, or straight pull bolts. I do not like any action type that puts limits on my loading dimensions or bullet choices, or that uses the barrel as a mounting surface for other hardware.

Shotguns
In direct contrast to the rifles, the shotguns must be either pump or automatics, I have found doubles to be too heavy. They must be 12 gauge, with a 3 or 3.5 inch chamber, and choke tubes are a good idea. Favorite Brand? Browning BPS; Auto 5; but I do use a Stevens 67 a lot as well.

Handguns
Ruger Redhawk, 44 mag. I do not use this for coyotes, but it is a nice revolver. I would like to try one of the high performace "rifle-pistols", but that is a while away.

Favorite Caliber.
Well here agian, I have several. I guess a lot of it depends on what I am hunting. Since this is a predator board, my favorite predator round at the moment is my 22-250. Because it is really simple to load for, fast and flat, and because I have loads worked up for it at the present time
wink.gif
. This winter the 17 Rem, 223, and 243 will be developed.

Favorite Bullet.
Here again I have several. For the Record however I will say Hornady, because I support the industry of my home state, and they work really well, Nosler and Sierra also make excellent bullets, would not turn up my nose at either of them, as all three brands shoot well in my rifle, with the slight edge going to Nosler and the 50 grain BTip. (22-250)

But I have noticed a general trend. Every rifle that I have loaded for preferred the polycarbonate tips to other styles, for max accuracy. At this point, I would like to state that a handloader should not have a favorite bullet or powder, but should use the components that his rifle dictates (within the needed specifications for the game pursued), and if the handloader is carefully listening, the rifle will say, usually very clearly, what it likes to eat. I beleive through observation of others, that many firearms do not reach their full potential, not because they are bad firearms, but because the handloaders have predjudices and preconceptions that prevents them from finding that extra margin of performance.

Favorite rifle? Hmm..I would have to say from what is available today either an A-bolt or Winchester model 70 classic. Funny thing is that my own primary calling rifle is a Ruger M77 MKII. When I bought it I already had a Winchester pre '64 model 70 which the classic mimmics. I wanted something a little different and with a little shorter barrel.

Favorite bullet? This is a little different I guess, but I like a simple boat tail soft point and in 22 cal I like the 50 grain bullets.

Favorite caliber? For just one I would have to pick the 22-250 for predators. My MKII is a .223 tho. I had the Winchester in .243 that I use for really long range shooting so the .223 made more sense to me simply because of the ease of getting ammo for plinking and practice.
