Whats your squarril gun?

I have too many guns that are squirrel qualified (is that even really possible?). In no certain order they are:

RWS model 36 air rifle
Ruger 22/45 stainless
Ruger 22/77 all weather
Marlin 882SS .22 WMR
Browning Challenger .22 lr
Browning Grade I .22 lr
Remington 870 12 gauge
Browning Light 12

The newest Browning in the bunch is the Grade I and it's a late 1960's gun.

Whats a squarril???

We gots jackalopes...

I'm looking for a good spot to hunt gray squirrel for the first time using a modded .454 airgun. There are only a few squirrels where I usually go to hunt rabbits, and nutria.

Fortunately, we also have invasive fox squirrels which are fair game all year long!

I shoot Contenders at them. (Ca groundsquirrels) 17 HMR is number one right now, but I have been known to send 223, 22 Hornet, 22LR at them. All the setups are SU 14 with scopes and all.

I like HMR no reloading. Same for LR, but I don't have the range or bullet performance.

223 is a joy, and there is a lot of splatter factor.

The Hornet while expensive shoot is a one holer at 100 yrds. (On a good day.) That barrel really ticked me off. Got it in a deal, and decided to buy a box of ammo before trading it away or selling. The first try with factory ammo did not just hit the bull, a few were landing in the same holes! No trading it period.

I hope to make some hits with a 17 REM centerfire, but have only done the early work on paper.

I'm a little surprised that nobody else is using the Marlin Model 60, thus far. It was the first firearm I received and has always been more accurate than I am. I've also used a Marlin Model 780 bolt gun. Had that thing sighted in with CCI Long CB's and grazed a squirrel along its head intentionally to capture it for my then-wife. Threw it in a cage and it grew to like her, but it always got agitated when I came around... I can't imagine why. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use a Ruger model 77 in .17 hmr for ground squirrels. Love it because you can tag them easy at 100 yrds. I use a 10-22 with a scope for tree squirrels.

i either use my savage model 219 in .22 hornet(was my grandpa's) if i just wanta shoot them. if i wanta eat them i use my winchester model 250 lever action in .22lr, as seen here with one of the savage beasts that i was able to take down before he ripped me limb from limb. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

5mm Rem still fine to eat if you head shoot. I'll try a box of the new ammo in the last season and see if its less destructive.
