Why is my cold bore shot off?

I've been working up loads the last few weekends for my 7/08. I've noticed each day my cold bore shot is averaging 2.6" lower than all the other shots. The point of impact does not vary after the cold bore. I have added a new Vortex scope, Burris rings, and a Millet one piece base. Is it the scope set up or what do think I should check first? I'm confused how the scope set up can only move on one shot.

Two things.

First to mind is barrel floating, how is it? Action Bedding?

Second, Montana Extreme makes a barrel conditioning oil that really does work to keep first shots on with all others. This is usually used with the cleaning process though.

Check your float and bedding.

shoot a flyer don't use your rest, put second shot on the rest, still 2.6 low look at your rest,
if it's dead nuts look at your gun.

Two loads were for the 145 Speer BT and 1 for a 162 grain A-Max. Once I shoot the cold bore it shoots right on the money. It hasn't always been that way. Could the first shot be taking up slack in the rings/base set up?

I have it on a Boyd's Thumbhole laminate. It's floated all the way . The action is not bedded.

It is most likely not your scope or rings, or your bases.

Some barrels will do this regardless. Most hunters know to shoot groups on a cold barrel cuz that is what happens in the field.

Heck, even bench guys take fouling shots to settle everything in.

You might try some Wipeout products and get that barrel clean. Then see how it reacts. Cleaning every 50 or more shots could be a problem with carbon or copper build up.

I love shooting at things in the dark.

Have you checked the torque on those action screws?

I used Wipeout the 2nd cleaning ago the I followed up with a bore paste last time. I'll check the action screws . I can't deal with the difference in shots. If I can't fix it I will have to get another barrel. Real shame too- its a good little shooter for any bullet weight you want to shoot .

I had a 22-250 do that same thing to me and it was the action screws, but I wasn't smart enough to figure it out right away, then it started doing some weird stuff, so now that's the first thing I check.

Well I tighten the action screw and it just swapped the cold bore from 2 .6 high to 2" lower than the following 3 shots. I know the barrel is real temp sensitive too . Do you guys think bedding the action will make a difference?
