I'm shooting a Savage that I swapped the barrel on for a 7-08 ER Shaw. It's been on the action for over a year . I worked up 3 loads that shoot .5 at a 100. Two loads were for the 145 Speer BT and 1 for a 162 grain A-Max. Once I shoot the cold bore it shoots right on the money. It hasn't always been that way. Could the first shot be taking up slack in the rings/base set up?
It is most likely not your scope or rings, or your bases.
Some barrels will do this regardless. Most hunters know to shoot groups on a cold barrel cuz that is what happens in the field.
Heck, even bench guys take fouling shots to settle everything in.
You might try some Wipeout products and get that barrel clean. Then see how it reacts. Cleaning every 50 or more shots could be a problem with carbon or copper build up.
I love shooting at things in the dark.
Have you checked the torque on those action screws?
I used Wipeout the 2nd cleaning ago the I followed up with a bore paste last time. I'll check the action screws . I can't deal with the difference in shots. If I can't fix it I will have to get another barrel. Real shame too- its a good little shooter for any bullet weight you want to shoot .
