Why is my cold bore shot off?

I have had many Savage shooters recommend that the rear tang should be floated also after your done bedding the action. They claim if there is contact on the tang behind the rear action screw if can cause problems.

Great news!!!

UPDATE: Ive had my barrel back from the gunsmith for a couple weeks now. Since he bedded my action I have tested several loads and can't believe the difference!! The cold bore is within a 1/2 on all loads and some there is no difference. The rifle acts completely different and shoots more consistent than I would have imagined .I have a 450 yd 12"x12" steel target i shoot from my yard. I have shot it cold bore and follow up shot several evenings with hits every time on both shots. I could never hit the cold bore consistently before I bedded the action. Lesson learned. It's the best $75 I ever spent on a rifle.

This has been a very good read. Every member should read this post. What you have is a path to maximize a fine rifle.

Thanks for your post.

I am guessing you are using this gun for hunting. You could just dial in the scope for the cold shot.

When I sight in my hunting gun I always wait 30 minutes between each shot.

Although, when I only wait 1 minute I've never had a gun that is off 2", that is a lot!

Some people do crazy things trying to fix this, including freezing barrels. It could make you lose your mind. Could be less frustration to get a new gun.

Oh I missed you got the gun bedded and it solved your problem. 1/2" is way better.

Bedding guns is very easy to do yourself. You should consider learning to do it. Sometimes if I am bored I bed a rifle before I even pull the trigger the first time.

Yeah ,bedding the stock really made it talk. I will look into doing myself in the future. But then again, I realize that gunsmiths gotta eat too!!! Like I tell my wife: Somebody went to school to learn how to do what u need done!!
