Anybody using a Fireball for Coyote?

You use a .17 Remington for deer and agree that a .22-250 is the minimum for coyotes. Where's the logic in that?

I thought maybe I should have explained myself better, but I did not want to come across as a "know it all".

I have and use .17 Rem's,221 fireball,222,22-250's,243, and 25-06 that I use for everything from groundhogs to deer. I have the experence, common sense, and will power to know when and if to take the shot. I shoot my rifles a lot and know them very well. Therefore I know what they are capable of, and their limitations.
I feel a 22-250 should be a minimum for the average coyote hunter. Especially when hunting in the forests of the north east, where one usually has a very small window at a clean shot at a almost always moving target.
I do not have the time to shoot like I used to. When I go to my cabin in the north eastern PA forests I use a 22-250 or 243. When I hunt farmlands around home I still use a .17Rem or .221. Here is a pic as to why.

Best quote is have read so far was by chuckaholic /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

There is doing it when everything is right...then there is doing it period. The 223 is an adequate and even good coyote killer....if you have never used a 243.

I.O.N.Doyle has a good quote on shooting coyotes also. Wish I had said this /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Seems whenever the topic of minimum calibers comes up they are usually discussed with two types of shot placements - "perfect" and "poor". There is a whole world of grey area out there and since these are hunting situations and not benchrest perfect is seldom acheived. While near-perfect placement will often drop whatever I have aimed at I would still like to have enough gun to make up for the times when marginal placement is what was available either through my poor shooting abilities or conditions.

To answer the original question: I shot a .222 for years and still shoot several coyotes a year with it. I got a .221 in a remington classic when it came out and have payed for it twice in hides (at $20 a hide). From ranges from 10 feet to 300 yards it is my choice EVERY time.

Hell, I'm probably below average, guess I need to break out the 06'! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Just bustin' your chops... I do use a .243 and have for a very long time.

Sleddog, where is that thread where we hashed a lot of this out on the Eastern Forum a year or two ago?

300 yards is a good shot for a .222 or a .223 I'm thinking.

Are you talking accuracy or energy at 300yds?

GC,
Like I said above, I don't get to shoot like I use to and that is why I carry a 22-250 or 243. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hey guys, I live in northeastern NC and have shot a 49 lb coyote with a 300 ultramag, and the coyote still ran about 50 yards. The shot was a straight away shot, and I hit him solid in the right rear leg, with a 165gr barnes triple shock. The bullet entered his rear leg about 2 -2.5" off from his anus, and exited about middle way of his right side rib cage.

I also shot another coyote (41lbs) with a 25-06, 100gr triple shock. The first shot hit him in the guts, and had to shoot him again,in the chest.

Both of the yotes were shot while deer hunting. I have an FX5 on order and can't wait to try it out around here.

Both the foot pounds are both down the .222 a little over 400 FP and the .223 just over 500 FP the bullet at that level has to be right on the mark. I'd be hoping to get one a lot closer than that calling.

PAyotehunter,
I have no clue what is going on. According to member number I registered before you and I did not register till 5/09/01.

This UBB software has never been accused of being bug free.

There's a big difference between what caliber will kill an animal and what I, you, or the guy down the street, would consider a "reasonable" minimum caliber in any given circumstances.

Many slaughter houses still kill 1500lb steers with a 22LR after all. I wouldn't want to hunt coyotes (or deer) with one, even knowing it would do the job with "good accuracy and shot placement".

I now think this is the best quote on the post...

We all have those days.

Minimum Caliber is always a very opinionated topic. As said a .22LR will kill 'em. Heck, a sharp stick will kill 'em (you may have to pick your shots/stabs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) why not make that the "minimum" weapon.

Some people don't take the time to pick their shots, or don’t fathom passing up or missing a chance because conditions are not perfect. These people need a bigger gun. Those guys that shoot everything in the head ("because it's more sincere") can get by with much less gun. A mans hunting style & the limitations he puts on himself will dictate the minimum diameter, not how thick the fur.
