Wow! I thought I was on a hunting website... One were people LIKED to shoot! To say anyone would get "bored" shooting their favorite rifle in next to insane. Is it just me? Maybe some people just like to TALK about shooting, actually DOING it is too much trouble??????
As far as price goes... Unless you are shooting some factory loaded obscure LARGE caliber, 30 bullets are not that expensive. I can guarantee the price paid is worth the knowledge you will gain, tenfold! Likely, if you think 30 bullets is a lot, then you VERY seldom shoot your rifle & probably haven’t shot it that many times all year. That in turn leads to rusty skills, an untuned rifle & a person that just might be afraid they won't get the results they are hoping for. If that's the case, nothing wrong with it, you'll still be close enough to kill that coyote. Just sit back in this thread & enjoy watching other shooters shoot, post & discuss. No need to bump the gums (or finger tips in this case) if your not going to contribute. For those that like to shoot, give it a try. It's right much fun & chalked full of learning!
Now for less bickering & more topic:
I really wanted to get my best rifle out for this post, but, since this is a predator hunting website, I figured I would post my calling gun (at least first). It's an 8# rifle with 20" sporter barrel, classic style hunting stock, wearing a 3.5-10X 40 scope, shooting an old favorite "hunting" bullet. That's about as "hunting" as you can get.
The rifle is chambered in vanilla 6BR shooting 31gr varget under an 85gr Sierra HPBT lit by a CCI 450. Leaves the barrel just barely under 3K. I knew the rifle shot well but have never shot this many back to back groups with it. It was a fun little test & I picked up some pointers (with this particular rifle/scope) that I wasn't expecting. Still, it hit right on par with my prediction except one group that was off key (call it what you want, driver error, flyer, BS, whatever). You can identify it with the arrow marked “F”... short for… well you know. On another note, the last group was better than average. Guess I was doing better about sighting the rifle towards the end. The reticle in the 10x scope completely covers up the ¾” dots. Getting a consistent hold was challenging. I thought about reshooting but then thought that would take the fun out of it.
The rifle…
An unmolested Rem 700 action, Brux 8.5 twist #3 barrel, ADL HS Precision stock, Wyatts “BR” box (bottom metal) with a partial AR-15 mag spring, Shilen Hunting trigger, Talley X-low rings/base, Leupold 3.5-10x40 CDS.
The Target....
Was shot from left to right, top to bottom. Kept looking better toward the end, should have started over I guess (think I could have had better final result). The “F” shot is much funnier now than when it happened. Average was .489333", I didn't write the subtract .243" on the paper. The =### is the outside diameter-.243".
The “close up”...
I will say this is one of the better groups I’ve had from this rifle (only had it less than a year). Maybe this test has me holding & sighting it a little better now???
And a bonus...
A picture toward the light so that the 5 holes are more visible (I wouldn’t chit you guys).
I shot these targets sitting from a concrete bench. Bi-pod used up front & a protector leather owl ear bag in rear. Since we had 24hrs… The shooting started on 9/21 that evening & I shot the last three groups around lunch on the following day (like 20 hr. total time). The conditions were a little better & so were the groups (other than that on "F" shot). This was my first & sole attempt. I really believe I could reshoot & get a little better results. At the very least wipe the .8 group out. Maybe even get everything JUST under the elusive
