Bolt action 6 groups, 5 shot challenge

Six 5-shot groups sounds boring, and expensive for the typical shooter. I'd gladly participate if it was three or four 5-shot groups, maybe even five. But 30 shots doesn't interest me, or most others, I suspect. Make it simple and you'll get more participation. For example, nobody shoots 6 groups on the same sheet of paper, and you haven't offered a free downloadable target for people to use. I see a flop of a contest here...

Ok what the heck are you guys shooting that is so dam expensive to shoot?

All these questions have been answered if you go back through and read. I put a link for targets for you. Google is your friend my friend. Lots of people shoot 6 groups on one sheet of paper! Try it you may like it.

The challenge has been issued!

Accept or decline it, but don't cry about it!

Humble pie taste great don't it?

My point is that few people will participate because of the number of shots required (boring, expensive, no interest in spending that much time). Then because of the lack of participation, you will conclude that people didn't participate because their rifles don't actually shoot as well as they claim.

A lot MORE would participate if it was 3 or 4 five-shot groups. Why 6? Why not 9? As it is, I am currently one of a very few members here to EVER post a target with 4 five-shot groups on the same target. Not many are interested in doing that.

It will cost a 223 shooter $25+ using typical commercial ammo, and more for other calibers.

Whatever. Good luck.

I'm wanting to see some of these 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, bug hole making, clover leaf shooting, all in the same hole, lights out shooting rifles and riflemen. Otherwise I will likely conclude as in the quote.

I know catwhacker has some bug hole shooters. Where's he at?

Wow. You "demand" recreational shooters to "prove it", and if they don't want to participate in your little benchrest game, you conclude they're liars. I'd tell you where you can stick this contest but it'd be a TOS violation.

Wow back at ya. And furthermore,

1) I did not demand shooters, recreational or otherwise, prove anything.

2) It ain't my "little benchrest game".

3) I didn't conclude anybody was a liar.

4) The guy that DID start the "little benchrest game" stated previously, Accept or decline it, but don't cry about it!

5) ^^^^^ I agree with this. ^^^^^

6) Thanks for abstaining from telling me where I can stick the contest. Besides the TOS, it woulda hurt my feelings.

7) Have a great day!

Since I reload, my .223 will run me about $0.30 per round... Let's see, 30 rounds at $0.30 = about $9.00, plus a pleasant afternoon at the range...How is that so expensive??

If my groups come out good, great...If not, so what..As stated initially, this is for fun and, maybe, some bragging rights...

If all anyone wants to do is gripe or complain, move on..!!

He's at makin' test loads for some BC tests, and some test loads for my 22-250 "Resurection" riffle... be about 10 to 14 days before I can get to the range.

... but I will see if I can come up with somefin for my Remington 222 Mag that will be under an inch for 6 groups.

But do they ALL have to be smaller than an inch, or just one of them be smaller than an inch??

.

No, no, no. Not CatShooter (although I figure you dang sure have some bug hole shooters).... I'm talkin the CatWhacker, the MI CatWhacker.

He is a bug hole shooter from way back. Although from way back where is still mystery.

What you all got against cats anyways?

OK. May as well make my excuses now. Never tried this before, but like OT said it was a good day at the range. It was a little breezy, 5mph or so @ 0845 to 10mph by 1130 when I finished, but manageable. 26 of the pills were .55gr Nosler BTs with .34gr of Benchmark. The last four shots were .55 gr Remingtons with the same load cuz I ran out of Noslers and the group shows it. It really hurt my average. Over all I am pleased with my load. OK here it goes. Average was 1.09....Remington 700 SPS 22-250....no work has been done to it except paint.

Figured there would be more participants after the weekend. I think I'll get the old trusty 6.5-284 out this week and give it a try.

Too expensive eh, huh, guess 22 rimfire ammo went up in price! Didn't say anything about what you had to shoot, but be it a bolt action.

Darn it...I thought maybe you were off a vise or @ 50 yds.....nice shooting.

Wow! I thought I was on a hunting website... One were people LIKED to shoot! To say anyone would get "bored" shooting their favorite rifle in next to insane. Is it just me? Maybe some people just like to TALK about shooting, actually DOING it is too much trouble??????

As far as price goes... Unless you are shooting some factory loaded obscure LARGE caliber, 30 bullets are not that expensive. I can guarantee the price paid is worth the knowledge you will gain, tenfold! Likely, if you think 30 bullets is a lot, then you VERY seldom shoot your rifle & probably haven’t shot it that many times all year. That in turn leads to rusty skills, an untuned rifle & a person that just might be afraid they won't get the results they are hoping for. If that's the case, nothing wrong with it, you'll still be close enough to kill that coyote. Just sit back in this thread & enjoy watching other shooters shoot, post & discuss. No need to bump the gums (or finger tips in this case) if your not going to contribute. For those that like to shoot, give it a try. It's right much fun & chalked full of learning!

Now for less bickering & more topic:

I really wanted to get my best rifle out for this post, but, since this is a predator hunting website, I figured I would post my calling gun (at least first). It's an 8# rifle with 20" sporter barrel, classic style hunting stock, wearing a 3.5-10X 40 scope, shooting an old favorite "hunting" bullet. That's about as "hunting" as you can get.

The rifle is chambered in vanilla 6BR shooting 31gr varget under an 85gr Sierra HPBT lit by a CCI 450. Leaves the barrel just barely under 3K. I knew the rifle shot well but have never shot this many back to back groups with it. It was a fun little test & I picked up some pointers (with this particular rifle/scope) that I wasn't expecting. Still, it hit right on par with my prediction except one group that was off key (call it what you want, driver error, flyer, BS, whatever). You can identify it with the arrow marked “F”... short for… well you know. On another note, the last group was better than average. Guess I was doing better about sighting the rifle towards the end. The reticle in the 10x scope completely covers up the ¾” dots. Getting a consistent hold was challenging. I thought about reshooting but then thought that would take the fun out of it.

The rifle…
An unmolested Rem 700 action, Brux 8.5 twist #3 barrel, ADL HS Precision stock, Wyatts “BR” box (bottom metal) with a partial AR-15 mag spring, Shilen Hunting trigger, Talley X-low rings/base, Leupold 3.5-10x40 CDS.
Rifle-1.jpg

The Target....
Was shot from left to right, top to bottom. Kept looking better toward the end, should have started over I guess (think I could have had better final result). The “F” shot is much funnier now than when it happened. Average was .489333", I didn't write the subtract .243" on the paper. The =### is the outside diameter-.243".
Target-1.jpg

The “close up”...
I will say this is one of the better groups I’ve had from this rifle (only had it less than a year). Maybe this test has me holding & sighting it a little better now???
Zoom.jpg

And a bonus...
A picture toward the light so that the 5 holes are more visible (I wouldn’t chit you guys).
Light.jpg

I shot these targets sitting from a concrete bench. Bi-pod used up front & a protector leather owl ear bag in rear. Since we had 24hrs… The shooting started on 9/21 that evening & I shot the last three groups around lunch on the following day (like 20 hr. total time). The conditions were a little better & so were the groups (other than that on "F" shot). This was my first & sole attempt. I really believe I could reshoot & get a little better results. At the very least wipe the .8 group out. Maybe even get everything JUST under the elusive

Have to agree with most , this is just for fun and i just enjoy shooting my hunting rifles , and being retired and my bench and range just out the back door , i probably shoot a few groups several times a week so shooting 30 rounds is not unusual for me.
