Most Worthless Calibers

i second the .257 Not saying it wont kill coyotes and deer and other light skinned animals with force, But....it falls between a huge gap in my OPINON (to big to load for a fur friendly round, and to small for big game)

Almost forgot the 308 win. i love the 260 and the 243 (both ballistically better then the 308)based off of the 308 case. Why not jump to a 300 win mag or 300wsm if your going to shoot a .30 cal

but I am 25-06 ai closet owner AND I love it but a 6mmai will kick the poo poo out of it.
I have 270 and its was given to me as b-day present nice gun. but as for the 270 chambering And theJack O'conner crew . IMO you were lied to but there was no internet back in his day .A 6.5-06 or 280 will kick the poo poo out of the 270 .dont want anyone fillings hert by Its a fact of life.

Kind of funny what people think of as great vs what's worthless, especially when the distinction is between 2 really really similar calibers. IE 270-3006-7mm. There's just nowhere near enough of a difference between those 3 to make a difference 90% of the time.

FWIW I started using a 25-06 last year for deer and goats. Easy as all get out to shoot and has worked out to 400, so I can't really call it worthless.

I live by the philosophy that I should own as many calibers as possible, biggest problem is deciding WHAT to hunt with, not whether or not I have an appropriate gun.

Personally I think anything with an AI attached to the end is a waste of money. New dies and boring something out to get a very modest increase in fps, or 2 more loadings out of a brass is useless. If I want more oomph I'll buy something with more OOMPH. And I KNOW there are a bunch of ackley lovers here, sorry

I don't think there is any thing worthless about any rifle caliber, the quarter bores are far from worthless, I'll take me 25-06 over a .243 or .270 any day thus it has a place. I also love me 30-06 and my 300 sure there is over lap but who doesn't like options. Now handguns I feel there are alot of worthless ones. 45 gap, 25 acp, .32, .380.

None, there's a place for all them. When it comes to putting critters on the ground there isn't much difference, and there really is lots of overlap, in calibers and cartridges. It's more about the bullet you're shooting than it is the cartridge/caliber your shooting it out of.

Tom.

I agree with these as well as anything followed by RUM, SAUM, Ultra Mag, Weatherby magnum. Too many calibers too close together anymore. I think a lot of calibers are fine if you own one or the other. For instance, I wouldn't own both the 17HMR and 22 magnum, the 204 and the 22-250, 260 and the 7mm08, the 280 and the 30-06, an xxx and an xxxAI of the same caliber. Each one of these pairs will do 95% of what the other does. No need to have both unless your out to collect a little of this and that or just have money to burn.

There was a time that I would have said 25 acp. Problem is I acquired a sweet little Beretta Jetfire that is a hoot to shoot. Wifes grandpa have it to me. With that thought there are no worthless chamberings.

If you say .380 you might as well add the 9mm. How about the 303 brit.

SKB I must admit that I really understand what you are saying here!!

Sometimes I wish I could also. But that's OK. I can honestly say I have more than I NEED. But not more than I WANT!! Tom.

A caliber can only be about as worthless as the person using it! All cartridges/calibers were originally designed for a certain purpose & using them for anything besides what the intended purpose was, will almost always make it seem like it could be "a worthless caliber". That being said, I never could get myself to take any interest in the 30-30's. Even though it's probably one of the best calibers for taking deer-sized game in heavy brush, I can think of alot other calibers I'd rather carry first!

My biggest problem with a lot of calibers outside the ones created many years ago is that most of what is being created anymore was already being acheived by the proper handloading of an existing cartridge. 260 is no more than an Americanized version of the 6.5x55. You don't see a huge 6.5x55 crowd even though the 260 gets rave reviews because it's the current fad. You let half a dozen gun rags start pumping up the 6.5x55 and they'll be selling off the shelf. In reality, what is a 308 Marlin going to do that a well loaded for 30-30 or 7-30 won't do in the lever action platform? If you own a .22LR, 22WMR, 17M2 and 17HMR, you have 4 guns that are worthless at 200yds in a 15mph wind. You might as well own two guns that won't do the job instead of 4. I have a 243 and a 7mm08, for that reason I won't buy a 260 or 308. What do I have to gain? I have a 223 and 243, so I don't own a 222 or 22-250 or 204, what's the point. I also won't own a 16 or 20 ga since I already have 12's and a 410's. If you are after collecting, that's different, but performance wise, there is too much overlap for the average person to gain anything out of having one of each, especially with the selection of bullets and powders available now. Now benchrest guys are a whole different animal, everybody knows they aren't right to start with,
