Muzzle Loader Questions

I know this is over kills for dogs, but I am going to get one and decided that a good accurate without breaking the bank model would be nice to get a dog with. I want to complete the tradition of getting a coyote with every weapon I own. All my guns have been properly christened so far, now my bow needs to stick one and hopefully a black powder also in the near future.

What loader should I get. I am thinking the TC line, they have a look to them and seems to be very accurate and their products seem to be liked by the masses. The TC Impact is the one I am looking at.

I shoot a CVA Kodiak magnum. 2 50 grain pellets of triple 7 and a 250 grain shockwave will [beeep] near shoot hole in hole at 100 yards!

I got a BP barrel for my contender pistol last year, havent had a chance to play with it much, but i really want to get something with it too!

I like the encores/ can switch to a CF barrel later if youd like.

Otherwise if it feels good in the hands most are pretty darn good nowadays.

Now a good ol flint locker would be the way to go, thats a challange!

Good luck

Dave

CVA is garbage IME, and I've yet to be impressed by any T/C product, ever.........

You obviously have not shot any of the new models from CVA or TC cause they ARE top of the muzzle loader world. The Optima Elite and Apex are outstanding and the TC Omega and Pro hunter are equal in performance but to costly. When you find the right load combination each of those guns will shoot a 1" group at 100 yards.

There are muzzleloaders and rifles that happen to load from the muzzle...

I like the more traditional styles...
Lyman Great Plains Rifle...you're in the perfect country for it...when you're done with coyotes, deer & elk can go one the menu...mines a .54 round ball gun.

My cousin just picked up a T/C Impact a couple months ago and it will shoot 1 1/2" groups @100 yards with 3 triple 7 pellets and a T/C 250 gr Shockwave.

I obviously know junk when I see it, and CVA screams junk. The only category they lead the muzzleloading industry in is the amount of rifles they've recalled. Spanish steel is better suited for making bottle caps than rifles.

And I HAVE shot the Omega, Prohunter, and new T/C Triumph as well. Knights shoot/handle better. So do Savages, if you can find one.......

I would not put TC in the same low end stuff as CVA. Perssonally I agree with 2much, and I go with the Knight products. My LRH is impossible to beat in accuracy by TC and definitely CVA. And definitely a large jump in quality.

CVA has made so much junk over the years that for a guy who has been around it is pretty tough to bite that bullet. Yes they have improved, no doubt. But once you get a bad taste in your mouth it is hard to take another bite. I know I would never ever consider buying another CVA product.

MZ's are just like anything else. So it really depends on what "break the bank" means. But you can buy top notch used Knight MK-85's for $200 to $300. And that is one of the finest inline BP rifles ever made. The best trigger ever put into a BP rifle, hands down. Qualtiy sights and quality barrel also. If you are really on a budget then look for one of those, they are out there.

Below is my Knight LRH. Top of the line in production MZ's. At least IMO.

If you want to have fun then go traditional. Look at a 36 caliber for small game such as coyotes, and even down to raccoons and squirrels. The 36 is a blast to shooot. I have a LH percussion 36 caliber in a custom built Tennessee Mountain Rifle. Try one of those. If you are a true shooter and hunter then I know you will buy one. Tom.

I do not put T/C in the league of imported junk like CVA. They are okay, but not in the same league as Knight rifles, IME. I sighted in my bud's Triumph with a new Redfield this year. It wasn't a bad set up, and shot pretty well. 2 other friends have Omegas in which I also mounted the scopes on and helped sight in. Another has a Pro Hunter. My Knight, as well as my other friends Knight, will outshoot the T/Cs, no doubt, and have better handling qualities to boot, IMO. Better triggers and barrels(Green Mt.) also.

I do not believe the break-open actioned rifles to be as accurate.

As far as CVA, there really isn't much more to be said, if you are familiar with their track record. Extruded barrels of junk steel, lawsuits, recalls, and personal injuries......

I just bought a Knight disc extreme this past year and it came with the adapter to forgo the discs, love it, very balanced and extremely accurate.

If Knight rifles are so top of the line then why did they almost go under. If they are so much better than everyone else then their sales should be going through the roof. But thats not happening. TC and CVA lead the way. CVA's upper end comes with bergara barrels and you can buy bergara barrels for the encore. These barrels are great in quality and shoot great. The centerfire barrels shoot very well. My 243 shoots under and inch at 100 yards. I just bought a 30-06 barrel and have yet to shoot it but i have no doubt it will be just as accurate as the 243.

Because too many guys like you don't know quality from crap. Read this and you may want to change your screen name. Do some searching on your beloved CVA and Bergara. They are truly one of the worst firearm products ever made....

maybe you should do a little more research. Thats all old news. And theres some missing info like the fact that one guy double loaded his rifle, another used smokeless powder and another used to much powder. Randy Wakeman is paid to run CVA into the ground. Chuck has also written a review about the new apex and loves the rifle. I do know quality from crap. Quality can be found in many different rifles.

TC is very successful because they have great cutomer service, a good name, a good product, and lots of advertising dollars.

CVA sells well because they sell them for cheap. Alot of people do not want to put alot of money into an MZ.

As far as Knight vs. CVA in quality?? You are kdding?? Right?? There is no way you would honestly put CVA and Knight in the same category when it comes to quality.

Put a Knight and a CVA in front of someone and let them pick one. They would pick the Knight every time. Every time.

I did mention that CVA has improved their quality. And they have. But believe me they have put out a ton of junk. You would have had to be around MZ's for awhile to know that. I do not know your experience. So I can not judge wha you may or may not know. I do know that if you have been around the business for the last 30 or 40 years then you would know that CVA has put out a ton of junk. Just an opinion. Tom.
