need help on caliber choice

thanks for everyones input. im still deciding though. by the way i rarely shoot over 100 yards. here most of the time by the time i see something i called in its around 50 to 75 yards or closer. i may go with the hornet (a fur is worth the extra money to me)
If given the choice of a rifle regardless of cost im sure they wouldnt choose the rifles I mentioned, I doubt they would choose a remington either.
You can keep doubting it all you want, but they did/do choose Remington.......

The 45gr winchester ammo shoots pretty good in a buddys CZ. I dont shoot factory stuff in mine, all reloads. I havnt shot a fox with it either, I cant imagine it would be too awful hard on them. I turned a fox into a tripod last year with a .223 it was ugly. We dont have many of them around here, well come to think about it..... wasnt much of anything around this winter.

Have you thought about a shotgun, if you can call them to inside 40 yards, that is your best fur friendly option next to a trap.

Wow, then I'm sure if we created a post titled "If money was no object, what rifle would you choose?" you really think the majority would take a factory made Remington? Exactly.

At those distances I would vote 22 Mag, rifles are cheap, ammo is cheap and its eefective on everything you want to shoot at those distances.

I almost recommended just bringing a shotgun along with your 17, especially when you said your shot are generall 50-75 or closer.

Thats what I thought too. Hey your a custom rifle guy, how many rifles do you have built on a savage action?

To you, I'm sure it does....

Just like your "sentence" above - part statement and part question - that you just ran together into one "sentence".

Nobody doubts the strength of a 700 action...the problem is with the rifle as a whole. I cant count how many times I have seen a 700 stripped down to the action and everything else sold. Doesnt say a lot for Remington if people strip off 95% of the gun so they can rebuild it into a shooter. At least the Savage guys when doing a barrel swap stay with a Savage barrel. And I rarely hear of people tearing the whole gun down or taking it to a smith because it doesnt shoot well out of the box.

I'm sure that some of your "I cant count how many times" Remington rifles that folks buy are bought just for the action. Bare actions are hard to come by. And in spite of some folk's theories, Remington actions are widely used for serious custom rifle builds. I'm not talking kitchen table custom rifles now... I'm talking serious custom builds....

I just bought a complete rifle for the action alone, and the parts will get peddled. I considered keeping it as it is because it shoots extremely well. But then I'd have to do something else for my planned build.

Feel free to count mine as one of the ones you know about being stripped... And there will likely be more on my part. Just don't tell folks it was stripped because it wouldn't shoot. That's stretching facts to make a point...

Someone wants a custom built rifle off a 700 action. Maybe in fact they want something remington doesnt offer. Thats the reason for stripping the rifle. I have done it.

Never fired a shot thru mine...... could have been a shooter, the world will never know
