Ah- ya cought me, yep I were talkin bout that Daisy .177 cal that
me Grand Dad give to me back in 57. It barely can knock me
empty koolaid cans off the Fence post at 15 paces. But will give
it credit, it's still ticken after all dem years. Oh it did take out a
Pigeon once at about 7'.

As stated above, 17 cals are .172. .177 is a pellet gun.
So are you talking about pellet guns, 17cal rimfires, or 17cal centerfires, or are you just talking.
If you're talking about centerfires, the answer to your problem is definitely shot placement.
