Most Worthless Calibers

i think this shoulda been titled which are worthless for you. now i said the 577 for me seeing as how it would be impractical but that does in no way mean i dont want one. heck i want a 20mm as well but there is nothing to necessitate its power around here. man it would be fun to shoot squirrels with though.

A lot of testosterone and uneducated people on this thread. You can tell people have not shot or used some cartridges very much and for the most part a lot of you are splitting hairs. For you easterners, the 270 is one of the most popular calibers in western elk camps. There is not enough difference in a 270, 280, 7mm mag with a 150 grain bullet and under to make a difference to any elk, deer, or moose out there. Especially with todays bullets. There is not enough difference in a 243 or 6mm. Too many people with chronographs out there trying to one up everyone. I have yet to see one of the new super-short, ultra-mag, or any other wildcat killing any deader than the calibers we had 40 years ago. All the new calibers are good for gun sales and gun writers to have something new to talk about. They haven't made people better shots or better hunters. This is a very ridiculous thread. Shoot what you want, but your dad is not tougher than my dad and your caliber is not better than my caliber.

Quote:I might prefer being killed by the elephant?

No kidding.

I enjoy shooting the "big boys", but that one is borderline ridiculous. I read somewhere that it was developed as an emergency backup rifle for PHs to save clients who had wounded that bull elephant. It might make sense in that context, but I darned sure wouldn't want to hunt with one.

Now a 500NE in an English double on the other hand...

Gonna have the say the hmr

Hm2 does it 80% as well for 40-50% of the price, and I don't feel like "that one guy, you know the one" bragging about small groups owning the hm2, the hm2 is for just killing small stuff.

Ah- ya cought me, yep I were talkin bout that Daisy .177 cal that
me Grand Dad give to me back in 57. It barely can knock me
empty koolaid cans off the Fence post at 15 paces. But will give
it credit, it's still ticken after all dem years. Oh it did take out a
Pigeon once at about 7'.

Never have been able to get one to fall in it's tracks.

AND NO, Shot placement hasn't been the issue.

As stated above, 17 cals are .172. .177 is a pellet gun.
So are you talking about pellet guns, 17cal rimfires, or 17cal centerfires, or are you just talking.
If you're talking about centerfires, the answer to your problem is definitely shot placement.

Edit; Here's a link to see several Coyotes shot dead with 17cal's. Or you can pay for the mans videos and see a hundred or more.
Just because you can't do it, doesn't mean it can't be done.

Not trying to make anyone mad, but what is the purpose of this topic? It appears to me when someone has nothing else better to do, they come on here and start a thread such as...."what's best, Savage or Remington".....or,"show us your varmint rifles".....or, "which is better, 223 or 22-250"....or,"which is best, pants or bibs". I just don't see as it makes any difference whether anyone else likes the calibers I like, or the kind of clothes I wear. I think some of you take this stuff way too seriously.

This may be considered free entertainment and education.

By our great game dept rules .25 pistol is legal for big game.

Leave it to Tripod3 to display the most sense I've seen in this long thread!

While the .25 acp might have made some sense before the current crop of larger caliber smaller framed handguns .... with todays TWEAKERS ..... it's just a bee sting!

The perp may well die after being shot by it but may well not do so before KILLING YOU first!

I vote in todays environment ......... the .25 acp is not a smart choice.

(I especially liked the humor about .243 bullets bouncing off of coyotes!!)

That poster must have some up-armored otes ....... mine have never argued with my rifles in that caliber.

If I don't like a threads content I don't read it or at least don't comment on it. You thinking a thread is stupid and saying it is just like someone saying they think this caliber is worthless. Not trying to make you mad but If If I don't like to read about something I just don't read it. It's all in fun.

No matter what caliber is mentioned, someone will like it.
I bought a 25 WSSM for my wife, because of the light weight of the gun and the low recoil. With her artheritis she still gets to enjoy deer hunting.
I would agree about the 17/50BMG, I'm waiting for the 20/50BMG. It should be a real skwerl and wabbit gun.

As a side note; in Arkensaw, ANY CENTERFIRE is legal to deer hunt with. Even 17 Rem or 25ACP. Never saw a 25ACP with a 4" barrel which is minimum for a pistol here.

Ditto Frozenbutt! It is not prime hunting season so I get my entertainment on PM, lets face it this forum has been around for many years and just about everything has been talked about so why not just shut down and search. Frankly I like it when the ol' Rem vs. Savage comes up. It is like watching a rematch between to fighters. Same fighters different punches. Plus there are a couple dudes on here that flat make me belly laugh. If I don't like a thread I don't read it. It is funny that someone complains on page 9! You think they would have not read through it if it was that painfull. Don't spoil the fun for the rest of us.

The rest that you all have listed I can find a use for, but I like guns and I'm not prejudiced! I used to think the 223, 204, and 25wssm were pointless, but now I own at least one of each, so I don't judge any of them anymore!

I agree with all of these guys. I own some calibers listed, and have owned some of the others listed. Each was designed with a respective use in mind, and each has likely fulfilled that use many times over. Much like motivationteam, I just love guns. I find them fascinating. The engineering that went behind manufacturing, to the physics behind the ballistics of a caliber. All of these things are sure awesome to learn about, and the more you learn, the more you realize you dont know jack! (I prob should get to know Jack Roberts though...) I love the history behind cartridges as well. Take the time to read about them in one of your reloading manuals, you will find calibers you once found useless a little more interesting.

As long as it goes bang, I'm interested in it. Since you guys want to talk worthless calibers.... I'm toying around with buying a .218 Bee leaver gun.

I could never see the advantage of the 218 Bee over the 22 hornet, then I bought one in a Ruger #1 and I believe I am going to like it. You will find ammunition is hard to find and rather expensive but reloading seems to be an option if you can find the brass.
